Acclaimed actress Carrie Preston is poised for another exciting chapter in her career as the fourth season of the legal drama *Elsbeth* is set to premiere on Thursday, 8 October 2026. Known for her award-winning role as Elsbeth Tascioni in both *The Good Wife* and its spinoff, *The Good Fight*, Preston is contemplating the potential of stepping into the director’s chair for this latest series, although she acknowledges the complexities involved in doing so while also acting.
During her recent appearance at the BAFTA Tea Party held at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City, Preston candidly shared her thoughts with *People* magazine. “In theory, directing an episode sounds appealing. However, in practise, it could present some challenges, given that I would be on camera the entire time,” she remarked.

The multi-talented Preston has previously directed two episodes of *The Good Fight*, along with episodes of *Claws* and *Your Honor*. Despite her reservations regarding directing on *Elsbeth*, she remains open to the idea if the show’s success continues. “Perhaps if we’re fortunate enough to keep this going, I might put my name forward and see if they would allow me to direct,” she added.

Preston first captivated audiences as Elsbeth Tascioni, a quirky attorney-turned-consultant detective in *The Good Wife*. Her character was well-received, leading to her reprisal in *The Good Fight* from 2017 to 2022. Now, with *Elsbeth* in its fourth season, Preston reflects on the journey and evolution of her beloved character, which first premiered in 2024.
The actress, who earned a Primetime Emmy Award in 2013 for her work in *The Good Wife*, is excited about the upcoming season of *Elsbeth*. She teased fans with intriguing details about the new episodes, saying, “One of the significant developments this season is the introduction of Elsbeth’s mother, which promises to shed new light on the character. We’ve seen her in various roles—friend, coworker, and mother—but we’ve yet to explore her relationship as a daughter. That will be a delightful aspect to see.” Additionally, Preston hinted at some upcoming changes within the precinct that will likely add new dynamics to the series.
Fans can anticipate a fresh array of guest stars this season, including Jemima Kirke, Nicole Scherzinger, Nicholas Braun, and basketball player OG Anunoby from the New York Knicks, as showcased in the recently released trailer. In a pivotal moment from the promotional material, the title character asserts, “It’s my job to ensure that the police do everything right. I wouldn’t want them to arrest the wrong person,” emphasising her commitment to justice.
At this stage in her career, Preston expresses a sense of contentment and fulfilment. “As actors, we often find ourselves in a constant chase for the next opportunity. There’s always the question of what comes next. However, I feel incredibly grateful to be right where I am now. It’s almost a moral imperative for me to enjoy every moment of this journey,” she said.
As the anticipation builds for the latest season, Preston’s reflections highlight not only the challenges and triumphs faced by actors behind and in front of the camera, but also the personal growth that accompanies a successful career in the arts. With *Elsbeth* returning to screens soon, fans will have the chance to delve deeper into the complexities of the character they have come to adore.
*Elsbeth* season 4 will premiere on CBS and stream on Paramount+ starting Thursday, 8 October, offering viewers an engaging mix of legal drama, character exploration, and the signature charm that has characterised Preston’s performances throughout her career.
