A tragic incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Saturday, 10 October, resulted in the death of a man after he entered the tiger enclosure and was mauled by one of the animals. Eyewitnesses reported that the unidentified man engaged in antics, including dancing and requesting photographs with the Siberian tiger, named Altai, prior to the fatal encounter.

According to accounts from onlookers, the man climbed onto a barrier and leaped approximately 15 feet into the enclosure, despite attempts by a visitor to prevent him from doing so. Witnesses captured moments leading up to the incident, where the man was reportedly seen singing and shouting near the tiger, at one point holding his finger up in an unclear gesture as the tiger approached.
Ella Ford, who was visiting the park with her boyfriend, observed the man moments before the incident. She described him as “pacing around with his headphones” before he climbed the barriers. Ford recounted seeing him jump into the enclosure and crawl in front of the tiger, heightening the sense of alarm among spectators.
Anthony Hunt and his girlfriend, Scarlet Hogan, also noted the man’s erratic behaviour as they arrived at the zoo, stating that he appeared to be “walking very fast” and “dancing.” They described the moment he launched himself into the enclosure as akin to a performance, with the man seemingly eager to attract the attention of the tiger.
Hogan shared further details, saying that the man was using his phone, likely attempting to take selfies with the animal in the backdrop. Eye witnesses voiced their distress as they attempted to distract Altai, calling out in desperation while park staff deployed sonic weapons to deter the tiger from the scene.
Following the attack, South Yorkshire Police and emergency services were summoned to the park, but were informed that the man had pronounced dead at the site of the incident. A statement from the police confirmed that the victim’s family has been notified and are now receiving support from specialist officers.
In response to the event, Yorkshire Wildlife Park temporarily closed its doors, announcing on its website that it was cooperating with authorities to investigate the situation fully. The safety of visitors, staff, and animals has been emphasised as the highest priority during the closure.
Park representatives have advised against sharing videos circulating on social media that depict the incident, labelling the footage as distressing. “We are aware of videos circulating online and we would encourage people not to share this distressing footage,” a park spokesperson told PEOPLE.
As the investigation continues, flowers and tributes have begun to appear at the entrance to the park, reflecting the sorrow felt by both visitors and the wider community. Yorkshire Wildlife Park has stated that it is committed to determining the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The park’s closure as of 12 October continues, but messages have been posted to keep the public informed about ongoing developments.
