This month sees the release of Nick Medina’s latest horror novel, *Savage Lake*, a spine-tingling tale that brings fresh perspectives to familiar horror themes. Published by Berkley, the book follows the story of a mother, Nell Marin, and her teenage son, Oscar, who find themselves trapped in an isolated cabin that harbours dark secrets.
The narrative commences with Nell confronting the death of her estranged father, which prompts her to journey with Oscar to the family’s cabin on Torchlight Lake. Initially intended as a simple fixing-up mission, the visit quickly unravels into a terrifying ordeal. The depths of the woods surrounding the cabin seem to bleed with past memories for Nell, making the setting not just a backdrop but a character in its own right.
As the story unfolds, circumstances take a sinister turn when the roads are blocked by a local tribe, leaving the pair stranded. With the isolation begins a growing sense of dread, particularly for Oscar, who begins to notice strange occurrences. He hears eerie screams echoing across the lake and feels an unseen presence lurking among the trees. As his mother’s mental state deteriorates, the suspense only heightens, inviting readers to question what is real and what is imagined.
Medina has expressed his enthusiasm about the book, commenting on his fascination with “cabin in the woods” narratives. He has described *Savage Lake* as his homage to this subgenre, where he seeks to inject new life into well-established horror conventions while exploring themes that evoke both psychological fear and folklore—Bigfoot making a curious appearance as a nod to local legends.
An exclusive excerpt from the book reveals the intriguing dynamic between Nell and Oscar, as they navigate their peculiar circumstances. The chilling atmosphere of their surroundings is amplified by the night sky, filled with stars unknown to city-dwelling Oscar, and shadows that may or may not be figments of his imagination. Just as the tension starts to build, the narrative hints at underlying familial issues that likely plague Nell and Oscar beyond their mechanical fears.
In-depth character development appears to be a strong element of *Savage Lake*, with Oscar’s horror film obsession providing many layers. He navigates through the interplay of childhood dreams versus nightmarish realities, often reflecting on the thematic similarities between his life and the horror concepts he loves. For readers, this interplay could serve as a mirror, exposing their fears through the lens of horror storytelling.
The book’s cover art, showcasing striking visuals, is designed to evoke intrigue and encapsulate the essence of the story. Medina’s creative direction aims to ensure that readers are absorbed into a world fraught with tension and anxiety, inviting comparisons to other horror classics while establishing a unique voice.
*Savage Lake* is due for release on 27 October 2023, just in time for the spooky season, making it an excellent choice for horror aficionados looking for hair-raising material to immerse themselves in this Halloween. With pre-orders now available from various booksellers, anticipation is mounting for what is poised to be one of the standout reads this autumn.
As Medina awaits feedback from audiences, he remains committed to crafting horror that transcends the typical scares, exploring deeper psychological themes and emotional complexities that could resonate long after the final page is turned. Readers can currently enjoy an exciting sneak peek into the story, available through interviews and literary profiles, showcasing Medina’s passion for the genre.
