Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has set tongues wagging with his recent revelations about his health journey, attributing his weight loss and improved well-being to a medication he began using two years ago. The 61-year-old Democrat, who has consistently spoken about his lifelong struggle with weight, shared details of his personal experience with a GLP-1 drug, a treatment initially developed to help manage blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Pritzker disclosed that he has shed approximately 80 pounds since starting the medication, an outcome he hopes will encourage others facing similar health challenges. Reflecting on his decision to share his story, he stated, “I came to the conclusion that it would be helpful to others to hear why I went on a GLP-1 and what the effect has been for me.” This marks a shift for the Governor, who previously refrained from discussing his medication in public forums, deeming such inquiries too personal.

Pritzker’s journey began following a troubling diagnosis of prediabetes, prompted by troubling bloodwork results at age 58. Coming from a family with a history of serious health issues—his father died from a heart attack at just 39—Pritzker was aware of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle from a young age. Despite previous efforts to manage his weight through various diets, including the keto and Atkins regimes, he found himself returning to old habits, exacerbating his health concerns.

After being advised by his healthcare team to consider insulin to manage his diabetes, Pritzker experienced a moment of reckoning. “I immediately said, ‘I don’t want to be on insulin,’” he recalled. His doctor introduced the idea of a GLP-1 medication as an alternative. This compounded strategy, which included dietary changes, regular exercise, and the GLP-1 drug, yielded positive results for Pritzker, leading to a significant improvement in his glucose levels and overall health.
“I was seeing success,” he noted. For Pritzker, the combination of medication and lifestyle changes alleviated what he described as “food noise,” allowing him to engage in daily exercise without feeling overwhelmed by appetite. Remarkably, he experienced no adverse side effects, which can often accompany GLP-1 treatment, such as nausea or fatigue.
Pritzker’s blood glucose levels improved markedly, dipping below the thresholds of diabetes and prediabetes. Once his health stabilised and his weight was under control, his doctors recommended he discontinue insulin use. This progression transformed his outlook on sharing his health narrative, as he felt his experiences could serve as a source of support for others battling similar challenges.
He underscores the importance of consulting with healthcare professionals for anyone contemplating GLP-1 treatment or any significant dietary changes. “I’m not suggesting that I’ve found the magic cure,” he cautioned, but he shared his genuine enthusiasm for the results he has witnessed, stating, “I’m losing weight and feeling more energetic and eating better.”
Despite the remarkable strides he has made, Pritzker acknowledges that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an ongoing challenge. He commits to walking at least four miles a day, a task which he has embraced rather than dreaded. “I feel better when I’m exercising,” he said, a stark contrast to his earlier experiences with physical activity, which he often found burdensome.
His newly found enjoyment in exercise is also reflected in his family life, where he engages in activities like hiking with his son and playing tennis with his daughter. The Governor’s transformation has not only improved his physical health but has also instilled a sense of optimism about the future, particularly regarding his hopes of witnessing the next generation of his family. “The idea that I feel better, that I might be around longer and maybe even see grandchildren someday means a whole lot to me,” he concluded.
With these heartfelt insights, Pritzker champions transparency regarding personal health challenges, ultimately hoping to inspire others grappling with weight and diabetes-related issues. His story serves as a reminder of the power of proactive health management and the significance of seeking help.
