Bella Ramsay, best known for her role in ‘The Last of Us’, has recently revealed that she has been diagnosed with autism. The 21-year-old star spoke candidly about her experience in an interview with British Vogue for their April issue, sharing insights into being neurodivergent and how she received her diagnosis while working on the acclaimed post-apocalyptic series by HBO.

Ramsey uses they/them pronouns and disclosed that the diagnosis came to light during the filming of the first season of ‘The Last of Us’. Autism Speaks defines autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a range of conditions marked by challenges in social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech, and nonverbal communication. Typically, signs of autism manifest around ages 2-3, though they can go unnoticed due to the diverse nature of the spectrum, as explained by the Child Mind Institute.
Admitting to feeling like a “weirdo” and a “loner” in her earlier years, Ramsey had often pondered the possibility of being autistic. It was only when a crew member, who had a child with autism, suggested that Ramsey might have the condition that they decided to seek a formal assessment. Ramsey shared that this revelation has had a positive impact on their acting career, as they have had to actively learn social cues and interactions which have enhanced their skills in portraying diverse characters.
Identifying as nonbinary, Ramsey expressed that receiving an official diagnosis of autism and having that label has been liberating for them. This newfound understanding has allowed them to navigate the world with more compassion towards themselves, especially in moments when everyday tasks seem challenging. While embracing their autism, Ramsey emphasised that gender and sexuality labels do not sit comfortably with them, as they feel restricted by them.
By disclosing their autism diagnosis, Ramsay feels empowered to be their authentic self and break free from societal expectations. They believe that raising awareness about their autism allows others to better understand and appreciate their perspective. For Ramsay, being open about their neurodiversity is a way to embrace their identity fully and navigate the world authentically, without masks or pretence.
Ramsay’s courage in sharing her journey with autism serves as an inspiration for others who may be navigating similar experiences. By being vocal about their diagnosis, Ramsay hopes to foster a more inclusive and understanding environment where individuals with autism can thrive and be accepted for who they are.
As the conversation around neurodiversity continues to evolve, Ramsay’s story adds a valuable narrative to the discourse, highlighting the importance of acceptance, empathy, and embracing one’s unique identity. By embracing their autism and sharing their truth, Ramsay is paving the way for greater representation and understanding in the entertainment industry and beyond.
