A Detroit family is grappling with unexpected grief after a tragic mix-up at a local funeral home, leading them to believe that their mother’s body was mistakenly cremated before her planned farewell. Kimberlly Kaye Moore was set to be remembered at a viewing and funeral scheduled for September 18, but the family’s attempt to pay their respects took a distressing turn.

The family first realised something was amiss when they arrived at Hutchison Funeral Home to view the body of Kimberlly Moore. Byron Moore, her son, recounted to local news outlet WXYZ that they were horrified to discover that the body they were presented with was not that of their loved one. “It’s a lady in there with our mother’s dress on, and her hair on, and her makeup — and it’s not our mother,” he said.
Bianca Robinson, Kimberlly’s daughter, shared her experience of the shocking revelation as the mortuary staff unzipped the body bag. What she thought would be a final goodbye quickly turned into confusion and sadness. “When he unzipped the bag, I looked at the toe, and I was like, it’s not a mole on her toe,” Robinson recalled, adding that she alerted the staff immediately to the discrepancy.

According to Robinson, the staff at Hutchison Funeral Home acknowledged the mix-up, suggesting that a problem with a toe tag caused the confusion. “They said they think the toe tag got wet and fell off, and that’s how her body got mixed up with somebody else’s body,” she explained to WXYZ, revealing the deep sense of loss her family now faces.
In light of this tragic error, the family attempted to seek clarity about what had happened. However, rather than finding solace, they were met with the heart-wrenching news that their mother’s body may have been cremated shortly after arriving at the funeral home due to the alleged mix-up. At this point, the family was left without the opportunity to bid farewell properly. “We don’t have a viewing. What do we have? We don’t even have her ashes,” lamented Robinson.
The situation quickly escalated, prompting the Detroit Police Department to respond to the scene as Kimberlly’s loved ones expressed their distress over the astonishing circumstances surrounding her death. The family’s anguish was palpable as they navigated the heartbreaking reality that they would not be able to say their final goodbyes.

Joseph Hutchison Jr., Vice President of Operations at the funeral home, has since publicly addressed the ordeal. In statements to news outlets, he expressed regret over the situation, stating that the establishment is currently conducting an investigation. Hutchison’s comments reflect the grave nature of the issue and the commitment to uncover the truth behind the mishap.
In an official statement, Hutchison Funeral Home conveyed their sorrow for Kimberlly Moore’s family, stating, “We are heartbroken and deeply sorry for what Ms. Moore’s family has experienced.” The funeral home assured the family that they are taking their concerns seriously and would maintain open communication throughout the investigation process. They also requested respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
As of late September 19, representatives from both the Detroit Police Department and Hutchison Funeral Home had not responded to media inquiries regarding the incident. The family continues to wait for answers while grappling with the emotional fallout of a bureaucratic failure that has robbed them of their final moments with Kimberlly Moore.
This alarming situation has highlighted the significant emotional toll that funeral home mix-ups can impose on grieving families. As investigations progress, the Moore family hopes for accountability and resolution following this deeply traumatic experience. They remain in mourning, struggling not only with their loss but the absence of closure that comes from a proper farewell.
