In a significant cultural revival, Z2 Comics has announced the re-release of Johnny Cash’s pioneering comic book, *Hello, I’m Johnny Cash*, originally published in 1976. This autobiographical comic provides a unique glimpse into both Cash’s meteoric rise to musical stardom and the personal challenges he faced along the way.

The initiative to return this iconic comic to print celebrates over five decades since its initial debut, allowing a new generation to discover the insights and lessons embedded in Cash’s narrative. The reissue is timed to coincide with Local Comic Shop Day, a fitting backdrop for a publication that has been deemed a “genuine creative endeavour” by the current publisher.
*Hello, I’m Johnny Cash* serves not only as a memoir but also as a reflection on the duality of fame—illustrating both its bright and dark sides. Johnny Cash collaborated with Archie Comics artist Al Hartley on the project, with contributions from co-writer Billy Zeoli. According to Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, the comic was ahead of its time in highlighting the experiences of musicians through the medium of comic books, especially during an era when such ventures were relatively rare.
John Carter Cash explained, “It was fairly unusual for musicians to have licensed comic books back in the late ’70s.” This innovative approach has since influenced how stories of musicians are presented in graphic storytelling today.
Now, more than two decades after his father’s passing, John Carter Cash works alongside Z2 Comics to bring this classic back for readers young and old. The upcoming reissue aims to convey Cash’s authentic story, which traverses his tumultuous career, marked by both incredible success and struggles with substance abuse, as well as personal heartaches, including the end of his first marriage to Vivian Liberto.
Z2 Comics described the work as a cautionary tale, incorporating both heartfelt writing and striking visuals to reach a broad audience. This narrative technique underscores the impact of sequential art in storytelling, as highlighted by Z2’s statement: “Decades before music and graphic storytelling became a thriving medium, Cash recognised the power of sequential imagery to tell his powerful story.”
The newly released edition of *Hello, I’m Johnny Cash* will feature two new cover variants, designed by Chip Kidd and Tim Bradstreet, providing a modern twist to the original artwork. In addition, the reissue will include reflections from John Carter Cash as well as insights from writer and journalist Alex Segura, adding layers of context to this compelling narrative.
John Carter Cash expressed his enthusiasm for the release, stating, “Having [Cash’s comic] reissued 50 years later and coming out on Local Comic Store Day is pretty cool. Having people celebrate something as unique as this comic and the continued interest in my father says as much about the fans as it does about him.”
As anticipation builds for the arrival of this timeless piece of artistic history, *Hello, I’m Johnny Cash* is set to make its debut on Wednesday, 23rd September. This re-release not only allows fans of Johnny Cash to reconnect with his legacy but also introduces a captivating and innovative storytelling format to a new audience, proving once again that the narrative of Johnny Cash remains a significant part of popular culture.
