In a heartwarming gesture, comedian and actor Pete Davidson recently made a significant contribution to the Cri du Chat Research Foundation, donating $20,000 to support research into the rare genetic disorder known as Cri du Chat syndrome, or 5p- syndrome. This act of kindness came after Davidson met a young fan named Liam, who is living with the condition, while filming his latest project, Tommy Karate, in Brooklyn.

Cri du Chat syndrome, which translates to “cry of the cat” in French, receives its name from one of its most distinctive symptoms—a high-pitched cry resembling the sound of a cat’s meowing. This rare condition affects approximately 50 to 60 infants each year and is characterised by a range of developmental and physical challenges. Those with the disorder often face obstacles such as speech and language delays, heart defects, and developmental disabilities, as explained by the Cleveland Clinic.

The special encounter between Davidson and Liam took place during his time in Brooklyn, where the Staten Island native took the opportunity to connect with the young boy, who aspires to become a comedian. In a post shared on Facebook by the Cri du Chat Research Foundation, the organisation expressed its gratitude to Davidson, highlighting his willingness to engage with Liam and learn more about the rare condition.
The foundation’s post included a heartfelt message, stating: “A heartfelt thank you to actor, writer, comedian, and native New Yorker, Pete Davidson, for taking the time to learn about 5p- syndrome, meet our Liam the Lion, and show him so much love.” The sentiment continued, noting the shared connection of being comedians, further solidifying the bond between Davidson and the young boy.
The Cri du Chat Research Foundation was particularly appreciative of Davidson’s efforts to raise awareness about the often-overlooked condition. “Pete, your genuine willingness to listen, learn, and shine a light on this rare and profound disorder means more to us than we can put into words,” the foundation remarked. It emphasised that his contribution would facilitate critical advancements in research and drug development for those affected by 5p- syndrome.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Davidson’s representative confirmed his donation, affirming the actor’s commitment to supporting meaningful causes. The foundation emphasised the importance of raising awareness, stating, “Awareness creates connection. Connection creates investment. Investment creates innovation. And innovation can create access to life-changing treatments.”
The organisation underscored that Davidson’s involvement would not only benefit Liam but also the wider community of individuals living with 5p- syndrome. They expressed their hope that increased visibility would lead to further advancements in treatment options and interventions for those affected by the disorder, which can often go unnoticed in broader discussions surrounding genetic conditions.
The Facebook post concluded with a touching tribute, thanking Davidson for leveraging his public persona to spotlight the challenges faced by the rare disease community. “Thank you Pete for using your platform and public figure status to shine a light on a rare disease community that so often goes unseen—and helping us create meaningful change for those living with 5p- syndrome,” it stated.
In a world where rare diseases often struggle for recognition, Davidson’s actions serve as a reminder of the power of empathy and the importance of raising awareness. His generous donation not only supports vital research but also fosters hope within families impacted by 5p- syndrome, highlighting the potential for collective action to drive positive change.
