A man from Alabama has received a life sentence after pleading guilty to the murder of his girlfriend. Charles Carson-Dowdy, 31, was sentenced on 26 August 2023 for the brutal killing of Starmichael Tucker, 30, which took place in January 2025.

Carson-Dowdy entered a guilty plea in April to a series of charges, including murder facilitated by a firearm, interstate domestic violence, cyberstalking, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida announced the sentencing, emphasising the severity and tragic nature of the offence.
The heart-wrenching details of the case reveal that Carson-Dowdy shot Tucker 14 times before running over her with her own vehicle on the evening of 2 January 2025. Tucker had attempted to end their relationship through a text message earlier that day.
During their turbulent relationship, which began in October 2024, Carson-Dowdy exhibited increasingly abusive behaviour. According to officials, he employed various means, including mobile phones and the internet, to cyberstalk Tucker and intimidate her. After Tucker spent time with her family in California, their relationship became strained, leading to escalating arguments by text message.
When Tucker returned to her home in Pensacola, Florida, she attempted to break off the relationship with Carson-Dowdy. However, he quickly travelled the 60 miles from Mobile to Pensacola, armed with a .40-calibre Taurus handgun and an extra magazine, despite being prohibited from possessing firearms due to his felony conviction.
Upon arriving at Tucker’s residence, Carson-Dowdy gained entry without permission and waited for her return. As soon as she left for the evening, he followed her outside and shot her in the back. After she fell, he approached her and continued to fire, discharging approximately ten more rounds at close range.
Following the attack, Carson-Dowdy fled the scene. Law enforcement quickly apprehended him, discovering the handgun in Tucker’s vehicle in Spanish Fort, Alabama.
In the aftermath of the sentencing, U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin expressed his condolences to Tucker’s family, describing her death as a tragic loss and highlighting the heinousness of Carson-Dowdy’s actions. “We cannot lessen the profound sadness caused by Ms. Tucker’s murder,” he stated. “Thanks to this aggressive prosecution, we can guarantee that this criminal will spend the rest of his life locked behind bars where he belongs.”
