Fifteen-year-old Abby Buell, a resident of Overland Park, Kansas, has shown remarkable resilience following a devastating diving accident during a swim practice session. This tragic incident took place on June 6 at Young’s Pool, resulting in Abby suffering a spinal cord injury that left her paralysed after she struck her head while diving into the four-foot-deep water.

Recollecting that fateful day, Abby shared with Fox 4 News that it was an ordinary practice session where she had successfully completed several dives prior to the incident. However, the last dive proved disastrous. “I had already dived off the block like four times, and it just went wrong that time,” she explained. The consequence of her dive was severe; the impact crushed her C6 vertebrae, leaving her unable to move.

Immediate help came when one of Abby’s teammates jumped back into the water, flipping her over to assess the situation. Shortly after, emergency services were notified and swiftly transported her to a local hospital, where she underwent surgery. Despite the medical intervention, doctors informed Abby’s family that it was highly unlikely she would regain the ability to walk, a harrowing reality for any young athlete.

The journey through recovery has been anything but easy for Abby. She spent a harrowing 58 days in the hospital, during which she faced the reality of her new circumstances. Initially unable to move her hand, her perseverance has allowed her to regain some mobility. “It’s getting better,” she remarked, noting her ability to use her phone and even swim using the backstroke independently, showcasing her determination and refusal to be defined by her injury.

Adapting back to home life has presented its own set of challenges. Abby noted the difficulties of navigating a house not designed for wheelchair accessibility, lightheartedly mentioning, “Currently, the paint is struggling because I keep hitting the walls.” Reflecting on the profound changes in her life, she added, “Obviously, this is going to change my entire life, but really it just took my summer away.”

Abby’s parents, Mary and Adam, experienced an alarming moment when they received a call from her best friend detailing the incident. “Her best friend called me and said, ‘Abby got hurt and she can’t move her legs,’” Mary recalled, expressing the sheer distress of witnessing their child in such a vulnerable state. Adam echoed this sentiment, describing the moment as a parental nightmare.

However, Mary disclosed that the existing limitations of their home remain a significant concern. “At this point in time, we can’t even get her into the bathroom to take a shower,” she revealed.

Taylor emphasised the challenge of unexpected expenses, stating, “Coming home is very expensive,” and highlighted the necessity for a customised van to transport Abby and her motorised wheelchair.

The fundraising efforts reflect a community coming together to support the Buell family through what would otherwise be an overwhelming journey. Comprehensive alterations to their home, including bathroom renovations and wider doorways, are now essential for Abby’s comfort and independence.
