Ashley Taunton, a 42-year-old mother from Connecticut, is currently recuperating in Rhode Island Hospital over a month after a life-altering incident on the highway. Taunton found herself at the centre of a heroic act when she intervened to help a group of stranded teenagers whose vehicle had hydroplaned during a rainstorm on Interstate 95.

On July 18, while driving with her youngest daughter, Taunton noticed a vehicle on the side of the road and instinctively decided to assist. “When I see there’s somebody in trouble, I tend to want to go help,” she stated from her hospital bed. Her maternal instincts quickly kicked in as she instructed her daughter to stay back while she approached the scene of the accident.
Upon reaching the car, Taunton encountered three teenage occupants, including the driver, who appeared shaken but relatively uninjured. However, the situation took a catastrophic turn when another vehicle lost control due to the slippery road conditions and came hurtling towards them. Without hesitation, Taunton pushed the driver, Vinny, out of harm’s way just moments before the car struck her.
Describing the impact, she recalled, “It just felt like a big explosion,” adding that her immediate realisation of critical injuries left her in a state of panic. Taunton sustained numerous life-threatening injuries, including internal carotid artery dissection and multiple organ lacerations. Despite the severity of her condition, she remained grateful for the chance to save another.
In the midst of her crisis, Taunton’s daughter rushed to her side, providing comfort until medical assistance arrived. “It felt like forever before the rescuers could get there,” she recounted, fearing for her life as she awaited help. “I knew I had internal bleeding. I thought, ‘That was it.’”
Once admitted to hospital, Taunton underwent several surgeries to address her extensive injuries. There was a period of uncertainty surrounding her recovery, but she emphasised her faith in the support she received, expressing gratitude for the healthcare team that worked tirelessly on her behalf. “I am so in awe of how evident God’s hand has been in all of this,” she reflected, asserting that everything aligned perfectly to ensure her survival.
In an unexpected twist, Taunton discovered through her husband that Vinny, the teenager she saved, was in fact the son of a friend she hadn’t seen in several years. This revelation brought a deeper sense of connection to her already traumatic experience. Upon learning about the incident, her friend Jamie O’Rourke exclaimed, “Oh my gosh, that was Ashley? She saved my son’s life.”
O’Rourke praised Taunton’s bravery, stating, “She was so courageous to put herself in danger.” As for Taunton’s recovery, doctors have warned that it could take up to a year, including extensive physical therapy. Nevertheless, she remains optimistic and is increasingly appreciative of the support from her community, which has rallied around her through initiatives like GoFundMe and Meal Train.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Taunton has gained a new perspective on life and the importance of cherishing time with loved ones. “Life is very busy and it’s easy to postpone plans, especially with friends and loved ones,” she noted. “I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to make sure that I am taking time, even if it’s just going to grab a coffee with a friend, because we never know how you’re going to leave this earth.”
As she continues her recovery, Taunton remains a visible testament to the strength of the human spirit, demonstrating that ordinary acts of kindness can lead to extraordinary impacts. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of being present and supportive in times of crisis, together with the resilience that many display when faced with adversity.
