In a heartwarming tale of resilience and hope, Miracle Tisdale, an 18-year-old who defied the odds after a traumatic start to life, is gearing up to pursue a career in nursing. This determination stems from her mother, Rose Smith, whose own story of survival following a near-fatal shooting has inspired not only Miracle but also their entire community.

On May 27, 2007, Rose Smith was the unsuspecting victim of a drive-by shooting while she was three months pregnant with Miracle. Returning home from the grocery store to prepare a family meal for Memorial Day, Rose was struck by bullets four times—once in the jaw, twice in the arm, and once in the spine. With her life hanging in the balance, Rose prayed fervently to survive for her unborn child. She recalls pleading, “Don’t let me die. I still had a lot of life ahead of me,” as she was rushed to the hospital.
Despite the grave prognosis from doctors who insisted she might never walk again, Rose underwent a risky surgery that successfully saved her life and her daughter’s. “I came out with my mouth wired shut and the baby had a heartbeat,” she reminisces, a moment that signified hope amid despair. When Miracle was born six months later via cesarean section, her mother knew instantly that her child’s name would be a testament to her survival—Miracle.
Today, after overcoming numerous challenges, Miracle Tisdale is about to embark on the next chapter of her life. Recently graduating from Mary Star of the Sea High School in Los Angeles, she achieved this milestone as a standout student recognised on the Principal’s Honour Roll throughout her four years, in addition to serving as the captain of her cheerleading team. This achievement is remarkable, given the unique challenges she faced growing up.
Inspired by her mother’s endurance and the care she provided to her throughout their lives, Miracle is set to attend California State University, Fullerton, pursuing her dream of becoming a registered nurse. “I look at her and I’m overwhelmed every day. I see her growing into the beautiful, independent woman that she is,” Rose remarks with evident pride.
Rose’s journey speaks not only to personal resilience but also to the solid support from her family. Despite the hurdles created by the shooting, including ongoing health issues and muscle spasms, Rose credits her children for keeping her motivated. “She sticks by me through the good, the bad, the ugly,” Smith reflects on Miracle’s unwavering support. Despite Rose’s struggles with her disability, they have managed to foster a nurturing environment.
Miracle’s aspiration to enter the nursing field began in her childhood while assisting her mother with daily tasks like shopping and bathing. As she became more involved in her mother’s care, her interest grew into a passion for helping others in similar situations. “I already know how to do basic skills,” she notes proudly, recognising that her experiences have equipped her with a strong foundation for her future career.
After graduating from middle school, a police officer involved in her family’s case connected Miracle with Operation Progress, a collaboration between the Los Angeles Police Department and Strive, which helps provide mentoring and scholarships for young people. This connection ultimately led to Miracle receiving a full scholarship to her high school, allowing her to pursue her education in a supportive environment.
Transitioning to her new school wasn’t without its challenges. Initially, Miracle felt out of place and struggled to find her footing. However, over time she formed lasting friendships that evolved into a supportive network she describes as “sisters and family.”
With her high school graduation now behind her, Rose attended the ceremony with a mix of emotions. “So much went through my mind because it took so much energy, so many sacrifices,” she explained, reflecting on the challenges faced over the years. The moment was a culmination of both her and Miracle’s efforts, and Rose felt grateful to witness her daughter’s achievement.
As Miracle prepares to head off to university this August, she expresses a blend of excitement and nerves about the future. “All things happen for a reason. That’s how I look at things now,” she reflects, demonstrating the wisdom she has gained from her experiences. It is clear that both mother and daughter exemplify the strength of the human spirit, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, hope and perseverance can lead to remarkable outcomes.
