Upon receiving reports of the vessel running aground, the Coast Guard promptly deployed both a response boat and a rescue helicopter. The rescue teams reached the scene approximately 40 minutes later at 3:40 a.m. to begin their operations.

Rescue efforts involved retrieving two men from the lake at around 4:20 a.m. One individual was found unconscious, while the other was reported to have sustained serious injuries. A third man, unharmed, was also rescued from the water by the helicopter crew.
All three individuals were immediately transported to local hospitals for medical treatment. Unfortunately, one of the men succumbed to his injuries, being pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m. The identities of the deceased and the surviving men have not been released to the public at this time.
Lieutenant junior grade Samuel Rodriguez, a Public Affairs Officer for Coast Guard Sector Detroit, expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost his life in this incident,” he stated. Rodriguez further commended the Coast Guard teams for their successful rescue of the two surviving men, adding that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable conditions that can arise on the water.
Rodriguez emphasised the importance of safety measures for those at sea. He encouraged all mariners to wear properly fitted life jackets, monitor weather forecasts and water conditions closely, and ensure they carry reliable communication devices whenever they set sail.
In addition to the rescue operations, the Coast Guard issued a marine safety broadcast alerting nearby boaters about the damaged vessel still stranded on the rocky shoreline of Starve Island. Authorities stressed the need for caution among other vessels in the vicinity, highlighting the potential dangers that can arise from such emergencies.
The Coast Guard continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and has not provided further details on the incident as inquiries are ongoing. Local authorities and the boating community are urged to remain vigilant and prioritise safety while on the water, particularly during times of unpredictable weather and environmental conditions.
As the community comes to terms with this heartbreaking loss, the incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need for safety measures in recreational boating, especially in areas known for challenging conditions. Guidance from safety officials highlights the critical importance of preparation and awareness, which can greatly enhance safety for all those who enjoy the waterways.
