In a heartbreaking turn of events, the body of a mother who had been missing for several days has been discovered in the Australian bush. Jana Armstrong, 30, was found on 11th July, just days after her family reported her disappearance. Armstrong’s loved ones are mourning the loss of a woman described as a devoted mother to her four-month-old son.
Authorities announced on 11th July that human remains had been uncovered in bushland near Esk Hampton Road in Redbank Creek, prompting immediate declarations of a crime scene. Though formal identification of the remains is pending, investigators suspect they belong to Armstrong, who was last seen on 7th July in Newtown, Queensland. The alarming news has cast a pall over her community, as friends and family grapple with the reality of her tragic fate.
Following the discovery, police executed a search warrant at a residence on West Street in Harristown, where they took a 48-year-old man into custody. This individual, later identified as Dharminder Singh, was subsequently charged with the murder of Armstrong, a case which police are treating as a domestic violence incident.
Singh faced Toowoomba Magistrates Court on 13th July. The courtroom saw an outpouring of support for Armstrong, with nearly 20 friends and family members, including her sister Faith Isaacs, in attendance. Among them was Armstrong’s infant son, whom Singh was caring for during the search for his mother. Isaacs expressed that being present in court was what Jana would have wanted, reflecting the family’s pursuit of justice.
Singh’s legal representative, Ramli Salehkon, has stated that his client maintains his innocence, stating that the case will be defended vigorously. In contrast, the police have made significant strides in their investigation, with the case remaining active as fresh evidence continues to emerge.
Armstrong’s disappearance sparked immediate concern among her loved ones. Police were alerted when her white Hyundai Kona was discovered abandoned at the corner of Jellicoe Street and Gordon Avenue the morning after she was last seen. Friends described Armstrong as a “gorgeous soul” and “an angel on earth,” emphasising that her disappearance was completely out of character.
As the investigation unfolded, information surfaced suggesting that Armstrong may have been murdered on the evening she vanished, with reports indicating that her body was likely transported to the bushland by Singh. Law enforcement officials believe that her car played a crucial role in the investigation, highlighting its significance in piecing together the events surrounding her death.
Detective Acting Superintendent Michael Manago remarked on the importance of the vehicle in the ongoing inquiry. He noted that initial reports concerning the car led to a “high-risk missing person investigation,” culminating in the tragic discovery of Armstrong’s remains.
The situation intensified as Singh was taken into custody with their infant son by his side on the morning of 12th July. He now faces charges of murder, along with other allegations, as he remains in police custody. The case has been adjourned, with a next court date set for 1st October, as investigators continue their work.
As the community mourns the loss of a dedicated mother, her sister Isaacs shared a poignant reflection on her life. “She always wanted to be a mum; that was her dream,” Isaacs said. Describing the bond between Armstrong and her son, she remarked, “To only spend four short months with him … she lived every day, every minute with her son.”
Officials are urging anyone who may have information related to the case, particularly those with dashcam or CCTV footage from the night of 7th July between Toowoomba and Esk along Esk Hampton Road and the New England Highway, to come forward to assist with the investigation.
