A teenager has been left in critical condition following an alleged attempted break-in at an Airbnb property in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The incident occurred on 24 September, and it has since led to the arrest of one young man and his accomplice.

Eighteen-year-old Dareon Pubien was reportedly shot in the chest by the property renter during the attempted robbery. Following the incident, which took place around 6 p.m. local time, multiple reports emerged detailing how the altercation unfolded. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Pubien suffering from an upper torso gunshot wound.
According to statements from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD), Pubien and a second suspect, identified as 25-year-old Sean Thompson, allegedly forced their way into the rental property. An argument ensued with the renter, who subsequently discharged a firearm, striking Pubien. Following the shooting, Pubien managed to flee the scene on foot but was later found by police a short distance away, bleeding from his injuries.
Emergency services transported Pubien to Broward Health Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. As of the latest updates, he remains hospitalised in a critical but stable condition. He now faces severe charges, including attempted murder and home invasion with a firearm. Thompson, the accomplice, has also been charged with the same offences.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Thompson appeared in court, where he was ordered to remain in custody without the option for bail. The incident is currently being investigated as a potential case of self-defence, with further details yet to be disclosed regarding the renter involved, who has not been publicly identified.
Local resident Arthur Butler Jr. recounted the chaos that ensued during the shooting. He reported hearing “at least 10” gunshots originating from the property. According to him, the situation escalated quickly, with individuals trying to escape through a gate before eventually going around to the side of the house. Butler admitted he was unaware of the specifics at the time, stating, “I didn’t see anything… I just heard the shots.”
The Fort Lauderdale Police are continuing their inquiry into the incident, and they have been in contact with relevant authorities, including Airbnb and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. However, as of now, no official statements have been released by these parties regarding the case.
