The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly set to part ways with play-by-play announcer Jacob Tobey following the revelation of an alleged affair involving a player’s sister. This news comes amidst a storm of controversy stemming from a series of posts on Tobey’s social media accounts that were allegedly made by a hacker.

On 7 July 2026, Tobey’s Instagram account was seemingly compromised, leading to a post in his Story that accused him of cheating on his long-term girlfriend, a relationship that had lasted six years. The post, which quickly gained traction on social media before being removed, read: “This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters. So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not. :)” This was accompanied by a photo of Tobey and his now-former girlfriend.

In addition, a second post on the account showed Tobey sharing an affectionate moment with a woman in a photo booth, identified as Loren Waters—the sister of Spurs player Lindy Waters III. This post further underscored the controversial allegations, asserting, “Me and the new girl Loren Waters :).”

The hacker, presumed to be Tobey’s ex-girlfriend, appears to have taken the opportunity to modify other posts on Tobey’s account, including changing the caption of a photo of him singing the national anthem at a Spurs game to “#cheater.” Screenshots of these posts circulated rapidly on social media, drawing significant public attention before Tobey was able to delete them.
Sources confirm that Tobey, who at the time was 29 years old, is officially out as the Spurs’ play-by-play announcer as a result of these allegations. Front Office Sports reported on 9 July that the Spurs had acted in response to the unfolding situation.
In the wake of the incident, both Tobey’s Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts have been set to private, and his LinkedIn profile has also seemingly disappeared. The move to restrict access to his accounts indicates a desire for privacy amid the scandal.
Meanwhile, Loren Waters’ social media presence has become private as well, raising speculation about the impact of these revelations on both her and Tobey’s reputations.
The Spurs franchise has yet to release a public statement regarding Tobey’s departure or the particulars surrounding the allegations, leaving fans and media alike awaiting further clarification on the situation. Tobey joined the Spurs’ broadcasting team in October 2024, and although the team reached the NBA Finals last season, he did not call any games during that series due to national broadcasting contracts.
As the story continues to unfold, many within the sports community are expressing their disbelief and concern over the implications this may have for Tobey’s career and the Spurs as an organisation. The ongoing situation serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of personal lives intersecting with professional obligations in the public eye.
