In a recent event held in Maryland, President Joe Biden delivered a scathing critique of former President Donald Trump, labelling him a “loser” and expressing deep disdain for what he characterised as Trump’s “vanity projects.” The remarks were made during the Maryland Democratic Party’s Back & Win Summit and Gala on June 27, where Biden focused on various renovations initiated by Trump during his second term.

Biden, who is 83 years old, highlighted several initiatives that he believes reflect Trump’s narcissism and lack of regard for governmental integrity. Among the projects he took aim at were renovations to the White House ballroom, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and even an attempt to rename the Kennedy Center after himself. As Biden spoke, his comments drew a mix of laughter and booing from the assembled crowd of Democratic supporters at the Live! Casino & Hotel in Hanover.

The president asserted, “It’s not just his vanity projects: tearing down the East Wing of the White House, making room for his ballroom, putting his name on the Kennedy Center, building an arch in his own honour, even hiring his own pool guy to fix the Reflecting Pool.” His use of the term “loser” was met with applause, showcasing the crowd’s alignment with his sentiments.

Continuing his critique, Biden suggested that Trump’s actions symbolise more than mere vanity; they embody corruption. Since Trump’s return to the White House, he has initiated a series of ambitious projects aimed at transforming various sites in Washington, D.C. His plans include the development of the West Potomac Park into the National Garden of American Heroes, which aims to honour prominent historical figures. The renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool alone has been earmarked for an expenditure of over $14 million, with Trump directing efforts to change its colour to “American flag blue.” However, this plan has already encountered significant setbacks due to a large algae bloom.

Alongside these projects, Trump has also constructed a temporary arena at the White House for hosting Ultimate Fighting Championship events and is thoroughly committed to beautifying the East Wing of the Presidential residence. This ballroom renovation has emerged as a notable subject in Trump’s public discussions, drawing parallels with his focus on complex issues like health care. An analysis highlighted that approximately one-third of his speeches this year have featured mentions of the ballroom, signalling its prominence in his agenda.

Biden also pointed to Trump’s controversial attempts to affix his name to the Kennedy Center. Following his re-election, Trump replaced the centre’s board of trustees in efforts to approve his name’s addition. However, a judge intervened, ruling that the process was fundamentally flawed and subsequently ordered that Trump’s name be removed from the centre.
