A 12-year-old boy from the United States has sustained injuries following a shark attack in the Bahamas. The incident occurred whilst the boy was swimming near Staniel Cay in the Exuma Cays on June 23. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the victim was enjoying a tour of the popular area accompanied by his brother when the attack took place.

Authorities confirmed that the boy has been treated for his injuries and is currently in stable condition. The identity of the young swimmer has not been publicly disclosed. His mother reported the incident to the police, providing details that the siblings were swimming in the water when the unfortunate event unfolded.
The Exuma Cays are renowned for their picturesque scenery, characterised by pristine white sandy beaches and vibrant turquoise waters. In recent years, American tourists have also been involved in shark attacks within the Bahamas. In August 2025, a man named Eddie Jarmakowicz, aged 52 and from Riviera Beach, Florida, suffered serious injuries while spearfishing near Grand Cay. His encounter with a six-foot shark resulted in critical damage to his left hand. After emergency surgery lasting over four hours, he was discharged from the hospital.
On the following day, another attack was reported near Big Grand Cay on the island of Abaco. An unidentified 63-year-old American man was involved in this incident, also while spearfishing. He sustained severe injuries before being transported to a local clinic and then airlifted to the United States for further medical treatment.
The situation has highlighted the need for caution among swimmers and water enthusiasts in the region. Local authorities are urging visitors to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings while enjoying water-based activities. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism’s promotions of the Exumas showcase their reputation for untouched beauty, but incidents like these remind holidaymakers of the potential dangers in natural aquatic environments.
