Indie Lee, the founder of a pioneering clean beauty brand, recently shared her deeply personal medical journey, shedding light on how her experiences have shaped her into a formidable leader in the industry. Lee, who was once faced with a grim prognosis of terminal brain tumours, has transformed her challenges into a powerful narrative of resilience and hope.

In 2010, Lee was a successful Certified Public Accountant (CPA) working for HBO when her life took an unexpected turn. After being given just six months to live due to the discovery of brain tumours, Lee felt a sense of urgency to create something meaningful. Refusing to accept her dire diagnosis, she sold her late mother’s jewelry to raise funds and launch her own skincare brand, which she named after herself. Her passion for nature-derived products had been burgeoning, and this became the catalyst for her new venture.
Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Lee said, “I was told I was dying. I told everybody, ‘It ain’t going to happen. I’m going to create this line.’” Her determination stemmed from a desire not just to fight for her life, but for the sake of her young children, aged five and eight at the time. With a blend of fierce perseverance and a sense of purpose, she crafted her brand, embracing the ethos of clean beauty long before it became a commercial trend.
As her brand began to take shape, Lee became more involved in sustainable practices and the farm-to-table movement. She transformed her backyard into a 750-square-foot greenhouse, intending to educate children about nurturing the earth and growing their own food. “If a child grows their own carrot, they’re more likely to eat it,” she explained. However, the emergence of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and a rare brain tumour attributed to environmental factors, hindered her physical ability to maintain the greenhouse.
These challenges did not deter Lee. Instead, they inspired her to delve deeper into the connection between personal health and environmental sustainability. Striving to create products that were safe and effective, Indie Lee Skincare was born, garnering immediate attention. Major retailers like Vogue, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Henri Bendel began stocking her products, indicating the brand’s strong footing in the clean beauty movement.
In early 2023, Lee introduced Indie Lee Botanicals, an affordable skincare line available at Whole Foods. This new branch was conceived in response to the financial pressures many consumers face, with Lee recognising the hardships that can lead individuals to compromise on product safety and quality. “I went into a supermarket and watched a woman put food back as it was being rung up… This isn’t right,” Lee reflected on her realisation. By offering accessible products, she aims to meet consumers where they are, ensuring that everyone can access clean beauty solutions.
For years, Lee kept her health struggles largely private, fearing that revealing her situation would raise doubts about the brand’s longevity among customers and investors. However, she has since learned the importance of transparency, both for her own mental health and as a way to strengthen the bond with her audience. “I was just trying to be a good steward, let’s put it that way. And it was at the detriment of myself,” she admitted.
Lee’s recent TED Talk at SUNY Oswego was a significant milestone in her journey of openness. Responding to her vulnerability, many in the audience expressed their gratitude, sharing their own struggles and thanking her for providing a voice to those navigating dark times. “The response has been overwhelmingly beautiful,” she enthused, highlighting the power of community and shared experiences in overcoming adversity.
As Lee continues to evolve both personally and professionally, her story resonates profoundly within the clean beauty community. Her mission has expanded beyond simply creating skincare; it is now centred on championing wellbeing, environmental consciousness, and encouraging others to embrace their challenges. “I won’t hide anymore. It’s who I am,” she affirmed, illustrating her commitment to authenticity and empowerment.
Indie Lee’s path from a life-threatening diagnosis to becoming a beacon of hope for others is a testament to the strength that can be found in adversity. As she forges ahead, her legacy serves as a reminder that even the most daunting obstacles can lead to remarkable, transformative outcomes.
