Actress Mckenna Grace has shared her journey of transformation and newfound confidence as she embarks on the promotional tour for the much-anticipated Hunger Games prequel, “Sunrise on the Reaping.” At 20 years of age, Grace’s experiences on the red carpet have been significantly shaped by her health struggles during her adolescence, leading her to embrace fashion in a way that reflects her personality and honours the franchise.

Grace has been attending red carpet events since she was only seven, but it is only recently that she has begun to feel comfortable in that spotlight. In a revealing interview with PEOPLE magazine, she attributed her recent confidence to a major spinal surgery she underwent to address her scoliosis. Prior to the surgery, the young actress battled insecurity, particularly regarding her appearance, which was exacerbated by her condition.
“I had severe scoliosis and one of my hips was higher than the other,” Grace explained. “Because of that, fitting into dresses and skirts became a source of anxiety for me. I absolutely detested fitting sessions as they would never fit as intended.” Despite her efforts in exercising to achieve a desired look, she found her body was misaligned, leaving her feeling out of sorts and leading to a struggle with body image.

The turning point came in 2022 when Grace underwent a life-altering procedure. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, she moved from a severe 47-degree curve in her spine to a significantly healthier 6-degree curve. This transformation not only changed her physical appearance but also her outlook on personal style. “Now, fashion is something fun and exciting for me, and I can pay tribute to films I’m a part of and things I adore,” she expressed.
As part of her promotional efforts for “Sunrise on the Reaping,” Grace has taken to the red carpet wearing outfits that reference iconic styles from previous Hunger Games films, particularly those worn by actress Jennifer Lawrence. For example, she wore a gown that echoed Katniss Everdeen’s wedding dress from “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” and later donned a striking red gown reminiscent of the Calvin Klein dress Lawrence sported at the Oscars in 2011.

Grace identifies as a “super fan” of the franchise, noting her desire to honour both the established characters and Jennifer Lawrence’s unforgettable looks. “I strive to find ways to pay homage to these incredible styles and the actresses who have come before me,” she stated. In her role as Maysilee Donner, chosen as a tribute from District 12, Grace is keen to reflect elements from both her character and the wider Hunger Games universe.
Not only is she incorporating subtle nods to the films through her outfits, but she also finds inspiration in thematic elements associated with her character. “It has been creatively fulfilling to reference elements like flowers for the arena or colours representing District 12,” she detailed. Grace highlighted her ongoing communication with her stylist, even messaging them at late hours to discuss new ideas that celebrate her character while tapping into her enthusiasm for the franchise.
The actress has expressed how different her relationship with fashion is now compared to her earlier years. “It has been such a liberating experience to stop being anxious about what I wear and to instead enjoy the process,” she remarked.
Mckenna Grace’s journey highlights how personal challenges can evolve into sources of strength and creativity. As she steps into the limelight for “Sunrise on the Reaping,” she not only embraces her newfound confidence but also demonstrates the joy of self-expression through fashion. With the film set to hit theatres on 20 November, all eyes will undoubtedly be on Grace as she showcases her unique style and celebrates her pivotal role in this beloved franchise.
