Kitty Carson, a dedicated independent animal rescuer, has recently gained attention for her commendable efforts in rehoming cats left behind after the death of her elderly neighbour. Following the loss of his wife, Carson’s neighbour continued caring for the animals until his recent passing. Upon learning of his death, Carson was contacted by the late neighbour’s family, who sought her assistance in finding new homes for his pets.

While the family managed to place the man’s two dogs with a rescue organisation and rehome the indoor cats among relatives, several outdoor cats were found abandoned at his residence upon the family’s return. Carson, who shared a deep bond with the neighbour’s late wife over their mutual love for animals, felt compelled to step in. “It felt like a way to honour their memory by helping place these cats that they loved,” Carson expressed.
Initially, the family had described the outdoor cats as feral. However, upon encountering the animals, Carson noticed they were not as wild as believed. “They were so hungry, even though I was new; they came right to me,” she recounted in a now widely shared social media post. She quickly realised that these cats were not feral but simply scared and confused, left without their owners and companions.
After a short search, Carson successfully captured the daughter cat, an eight-month-old who was pregnant. Recognising the urgency of the situation, she immediately took her to the local animal resource centre to undergo spaying. However, the challenge escalated when she discovered that the mother cat had given birth to a new litter. Carson recounts how the mother led her to the hidden kittens, initially concealed in a locked shed, and later moved them to a storm drain on the property.
Carson’s commitment to rescuing these animals extended beyond mere capture. After enduring a tense period of searching the area for the mother cat amidst fears that she might have been killed in an accident, Carson ultimately found both the mother and her kittens safe. On May 18, she managed to rescue the mother cat, her eight-month-old daughter, and two four-week-old kittens.
The next crucial step involved facilitating veterinary care for the animals. Carson arranged for the pregnant cat to go through a spay-abort procedure, which is a common veterinary practice to prevent unwanted litters. Following the operation, the mother was placed with a rescue that specialises in helping undersocialised cats, while the young kitten has already found a new home.
At the moment, Carson is fostering the mother cat and her kittens until they are ready for adoption, recognising the importance of keeping them healthy and safe. “Once they reach the right weight, I will transfer them to Friends for Animals – Humane Society of Burke County,” she stated. However, she also acknowledged the limitations of her efforts, emphasising that her own household is already at capacity with other rescues.
As an advocate for responsible pet care, Carson is particularly passionate about the importance of spaying and neutering pets. Her perspective on this issue has evolved over the years, particularly after witnessing the dire consequences of pet overpopulation in her community. “It’s vital to address this issue proactively to prevent suffering,” she emphasised.
Carson also noted the existence of a low-income stray neuter assistance programme in her county for pet owners concerned about costs. She highlighted that there is a collective struggle within the community, with many independent rescuers feeling overwhelmed by the number of animals in need.
