In a remarkable display of quick thinking and compassion, a woman giving lifesaving CPR has been credited with saving the life of cyclist Steve Ramdhanie, who collapsed due to a cardiac arrest while on a ride near Auckland, New Zealand. The incident, which took place on March 28, has attracted widespread attention, shedding light on the importance of immediate first aid in life-threatening situations.
Ramdhanie, who is a schoolteacher by profession, parted ways with his cycling friends after feeling unwell during their outing. As he attempted to make his way home, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while cycling uphill in the Auckland suburb of Albany. Tragically, he lost consciousness at that moment.

Witnesses reported that shortly after Ramdhanie’s collapse, a passerby discovered him on the ground. This quick-thinking woman immediately began administering CPR. Firefighters later recounted that her timely intervention made all the difference. Emergency services soon arrived on the scene, taking over resuscitation efforts.
According to a Facebook post by the New Zealand Professional Fire Fighters Union (NZPFU), Ramdhanie was without a pulse for over 16 minutes. It was only after first responders delivered three electric shocks that they were able to restore his heartbeat. Thankfully, he survived this critical period without suffering any significant brain injury.
Tracey Ramdhanie, Steve’s wife, expressed her relief and gratitude, stating, “With CPR, that 16 minutes is at the upper range of surviving without serious brain injury, so we were very lucky.” She acknowledged how vital the woman’s intervention was, alongside the swift actions of emergency services.
Following the incident, Ramdhanie was admitted to hospital where medical personnel discovered he had a blocked artery. Doctors fitted a stent to alleviate the blockage, and he was later discharged, with plans for further procedures to insert additional stents in the future.
Both Ramdhanie and his family were determined to express their gratitude to the courageous woman who played a crucial role in saving his life. “We would love to meet her and thank her too,” Tracey shared. “It would be nice if she knew what she did.”
The NZPFU later provided an uplifting update, confirming that they had made contact with the heroic bystander. The woman reportedly experienced an emotional reaction upon learning about the impact of her actions. She was described as being delighted to hear about Ramdhanie’s recovery and the significant role she played in his survival.
The incident serves as a compelling reminder of the lifesaving potential of bystander intervention in emergency situations. The rapid response by the Good Samaritan, coupled with the efforts of trained first responders, highlights the importance of community support and awareness of basic life-saving measures.
As Ramdhanie continues his recovery journey, the family remains hopeful for a reunion with the woman whose quick actions changed the course of his life. The story of her bravery not only stands as an inspiration but reinforces the necessity for everyone to be familiar with CPR techniques, which can make a crucial difference in emergencies.
