Esteemed actress Jessica Lange, now 77, has suggested that she may be nearing the end of her acting journey. In a recent interview with *Rolling Stone*, Lange reflected on her extensive career, labelling it as an extraordinary adventure, filled with cherished moments and incredible opportunities.

Lange’s latest project, a film adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s *Long Day’s Journey Into Night*, has prompted her to contemplate her future in the industry. She described the film as “not a bad way to end,” hinting that she could be ready to step back from the limelight. “I actually feel like I’m coming to an end,” she shared, indicating a sense of closure as she reflects on her decades-long career.

The accomplished star has garnered numerous accolades over her lifetime, including two Academy Awards, three Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award for her performance in the 2016 Broadway revival of O’Neill’s play. Reflecting on her career, Lange recalled her collaboration with legendary directors such as Bob Fosse and Martin Scorsese, and shared the joy of working alongside renowned actors including Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson.
Throughout her tenure in Hollywood, Lange has witnessed significant changes within the film industry. She expressed nostalgia for a time when directors worked closely alongside their actors on set, fostering an energised atmosphere and collaborative spirit. However, she lamented the growing distance that technological advancements have introduced: “Now it’s so, so removed,” she explained, criticising the lack of direct interaction with directors and the detrimental effects this shift has had on the filmmaking process.
When discussing her legacy, Lange wishes to be remembered as an “honest actor.” She noted the complexities of balancing family life with the demands of a career in acting, yet insisted that her experiences have all contributed to a rich and fulfilling adventure. “I’ve been incredibly lucky. I love acting, and I’ve had decades of being able to do it, which has been a joy for me,” Lange reflected.
Despite her contemplation of retirement, Lange remains involved in the industry; she recently reunited with acclaimed producer Ryan Murphy for the 13th season of FX’s *American Horror Story*. In this season, she reprised various roles alongside a familiar cast, including Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates.
*Long Day’s Journey Into Night*, which features Lange alongside actors Ed Harris, Ben Foster, and Colin Morgan, premiered in theatres on September 25. As her illustrious career approaches what might be its twilight years, Lange exemplifies both gratitude and introspection, highlighting the special moments that have marked her path in the performing arts.
While the question of retirement lingers, one thing remains clear: Jessica Lange has left an indelible mark on the world of theatre and film. As she weighs her next steps, it’s evident that her contributions to the arts will be celebrated for years to come, regardless of when she ultimately decides to say her final goodbye to acting.
