A former taxi driver turned animal rescuer, Ron King, has dedicated his efforts to creating a better future for donkeys. After experiencing a difficult period during the COVID-19 pandemic, King was inspired to launch a donkey rescue operation, which has since evolved into a comprehensive sanctuary and medical facility.

The journey began in 2021 when King was left jobless due to pandemic-related layoffs. During this challenging time, a TikTok video showcasing donkeys being sold for slaughterhouses struck a chord with him. Motivated by the plight of these animals, King started planning a donkey rescue, initiating the effort by caring for just three donkeys. It was a transformative experience, marking the beginning of his new life with equines.

King’s rescue initiative, named Oscar’s Place, pays homage to a beloved cat of co-founder Phil Selway. Located in Hopland, California, the operation has flourished over the past five years, successfully rescuing an impressive 496 donkeys. The rescue’s mission is to provide a safe haven for these animals, ensuring they receive the care and compassion they deserve.
In August 2025, the organisation received a considerable boost when it was gifted a 116-acre property in Potter Valley, California. This new location serves as a thriving sanctuary for donkeys, offering them a peaceful environment to roam and interact with fewer humans. “With our two locations, we can now accommodate up to 500 donkeys at any given time,” the organisation shares on its website, highlighting its commitment to animal welfare.
Recognising the need for enhanced care, Oscar’s Place expanded its capabilities by hiring Dr. Kate Schoenhals, a full-time veterinarian. Her arrival marked a significant step forward for the rescue as King aimed to create the first dedicated donkey hospital in the United States. This facility, located in Collinsville, Texas, officially opened last month and is designed to provide immediate medical attention to donkeys prior to their relocation to California.
Before the establishment of the hospital, the process of rescuing donkeys was fraught with complications. King recalled how rescued animals would only receive veterinary care days after being acquired, often leading to health issues during transport. “Now we can have a doctor examine them within hours of arrival,” he noted, emphasising the importance of timely medical attention.
As the rescue operation has expanded, so too has King’s dream for the future. He envisions all of his facilities having a positive impact on the lives of donkeys. His unwavering dedication is evident as he works tirelessly to ensure that every donkey under his care experiences a life of safety and dignity.
Oscar’s Place not only changes the lives of individual donkeys but also raises awareness about their plight and the importance of animal rescue. By sharing their stories and advocating for better treatment and understanding of these animals, King and his team hope to inspire others to join the cause.
In a world where many animals continue to face dire situations, Oscar’s Place stands as a beacon of hope for both donkeys and animal lovers alike. As King continues his mission, the future looks bright for the donkeys he champions, ensuring they will always have a safe haven and a chance at a fulfilling life.
