In a heart-wrenching account, Liv Williams has shared the struggles her family faced during her husband Nigel’s battle against cancer. Describing the past year as “horrific,” she revealed that Nigel made nearly two dozen visits to doctors, seeking answers for his debilitating pain that ultimately led to a devastating diagnosis.

The couple’s ordeal began in early 2023 when Nigel started experiencing significant discomfort in his lower back and legs. Initially seeking help from their family doctor, he was referred to a physical therapist. However, the lengthy wait for an appointment only exacerbated his condition. Liv noted that in addition to the persistent pain, her husband began to suffer from severe indigestion.
From March through June of that year, Nigel sought medical assistance multiple times, but more often than not, he was sent home with prescriptions for pain relief or digestive aid. Frustration mounted as Liv recounted that they decided to pay for an MRI scan, convinced the discomfort stemmed from a spinal issue, yet the results were unremarkable.
By July, Nigel’s condition had deteriorated to the point where Liv had to take him to the emergency room due to excruciating pain that rendered him unable to stand. “His leg appeared to be wasting away, and he was losing strength rapidly,” she said. Over the summer, he lost around 21 pounds, struggling to eat, which further diminished his already fragile health.
In December, moments before the holiday festivities, Liv insisted on a blood test from Nigel’s doctor. The situation took a critical turn just days later when Nigel experienced severe agony related to his inability to urinate. An ambulance ride to the ER became a torturous experience, resulting in Nigel’s anguished pleas to return home. Ultimately, Liv and their daughter made another trip to the hospital days later, where nurses immediately recognised the urgency of Nigel’s plight.
After being admitted and placed on IV fluids, Liv felt a glimmer of hope, but that was short-lived. The devastating news came swiftly when doctors informed them that Nigel had advanced cancer, spread widely throughout his body. Despite the urgency of palliative care, the family was shattered to learn there was no hope for recovery.
“The moment I heard the diagnosis, my heart sank. How was I supposed to break this news to our children?” Liv recounted, emphasising the emotional strain on their family, especially with their youngest child only 14 years old.
Just a day after receiving the tragic news, Liv organised a family gathering around Nigel’s bedside. They shared takeaway food and watched a movie together, which would become their final precious memory as a family. Nigel passed away on February 9, 2024, merely 12 days after his diagnosis, leaving his family grief-stricken and struggling to comprehend the loss.
In the aftermath of her husband’s death, Liv learned that the cancer he battled was pancreatic in nature, a type often overlooked until too late due to the lack of effective early detection tools. Reflecting on their harrowing experience, she decided to advocate for awareness surrounding a clinical trial for a breath test that may improve diagnostic capabilities for pancreatic cancer.
“Despite seeking help 24 times, we never discovered that it was pancreatic cancer until it was far too late,” Liv explained. “If there had been a breath test available, perhaps Nigel could have received treatment earlier, allowing for more precious moments together.”
Liv’s story underscores the critical importance of early detection in improving not only survival rates but also the quality of time available for families following a diagnosis. The signs were present, yet Nigel’s pain and symptoms were consistently dismissed, a tragedy that has left Liv resolute in her mission to ensure that others might avoid a similar fate.
“Early detection can make a substantial difference – it’s not just about survival; it’s about cherishing moments with loved ones while they are still able to enjoy life,” she concluded. Liv Williams’ poignant narrative serves as a reminder of the urgent need for enhanced diagnostic measures in oncology, particularly for pancreatic cancer, to avert the heartache that afflicted her family.
