Kerry Washington, the acclaimed actress known for her role in “Imperfect Women,” recently opened up about her parenting journey during a candid conversation with comedian Amy Poehler on her podcast, “Good Hang.” In this insightful dialogue, Washington reflected on the characteristics and values she hopes to instil in her children, including resilience and a good work ethic.

Washington, who shares three children with her husband, former NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha, expressed her curiosity about where her kids derive their drive and determination. Growing up in the Bronx, Washington acquired what she describes as a “scrappy hustler” mindset. However, she acknowledges that her children do not share the same upbringing. “I think about this because I feel like they don’t have that thing of being from the Bronx,” she remarked. “And so I wonder where they’ll find it.”

Despite their differing backgrounds, the actress noted that her children demonstrate remarkable resilience, particularly in the arena of sports. “I see it mostly in sports,” she stated, highlighting how her kids channel their determination and tenacity through athletic activities. Washington takes an active role in her children’s sporting experiences, attending games and cheering them on, albeit to their dismay. “I do. And much to the dismay of my children, because I’m like a loud cheerer,” she shared.
When it comes to navigating her children’s losses in sports, Washington opts for a thoughtful approach. Rather than rushing in to comfort them immediately, she allows her kids to express their feelings. “I try to figure out how they’re feeling about it, and ask a lot of questions,” she explained. She likened her parenting style to sitting on the bench with them, providing space for reflection and emotional processing. “[I] just give it some time,” she added.
Washington, a proud mother of three—11-year-old daughter Isabelle, 9-year-old son Caleb, and a 20-year-old stepdaughter—also spoke about the joy her children bring into her life. Each one is developing keen senses of humour, which she wholly appreciates. “I want to be really clear. I love when my kids get a good burn on me,” Washington declared, emphasising that she encourages wit while maintaining an atmosphere of respect and discipline in their household.
She acknowledged that, while some peers may grow up in homes without boundaries, her children understand the importance of discipline. “That does not fly in my home. It’s really important,” she asserted. However, seeing her children express their humour towards her indicates a level of safety and comfort in their relationship. “They feel safe with me; they see me,” she explained, appreciating the freedom her children have to showcase their intelligence and creativity.
Washington concluded her conversation by reflecting on how her kids’ antics keep her grounded and humble. “I love that my kids are so not impressed with me, which I love,” she shared, highlighting how their playful banter fosters a special bond between them as a family.
As a multifaceted actress and a devoted mother, Kerry Washington continues to balance her professional and personal life while cultivating an environment that encourages resilience, respect, and a good sense of humour among her children. Her journey, marked by self-awareness and thoughtful parenting, serves as an inspiration to many navigating the challenges of parenthood.
