In February 2021, a snowboarding accident dramatically altered the life of Shelby Perry, who lost her right eye due to an unfortunate mishap involving magnetic-lens goggles. This particular incident occurred when a tree branch struck her eye after the lens had inadvertently popped off the goggle. Following this life-altering experience, Perry has transformed her personal tragedy into a powerful movement aimed at supporting others facing similar challenges.

Perry, now 35 and residing in San Diego, had a vibrant lifestyle before her accident. She had moved to California to pursue sobriety while training as an EMT and eyeing a nursing career. The weekend of the accident began like any other, with bright blue skies and fresh powder enticing her and her friends to the slopes near Salt Lake City, Utah. However, during their last run on February 28, Perry’s day took a perilous turn when she attempted to navigate through a cluster of trees.

The pain was immediate and overwhelming. Initially disoriented, Perry struggled to comprehend the severity of her injury. After a swift response from ski patrol, she was rushed to the Moran Eye Center, where surgeons worked to save her vision. Despite being hopeful for a miracle, that hope faded as she realised her condition was far worse than she initially understood. By April 29, 2021, the decision was made to remove her damaged eye, a choice that surprisingly brought her a sense of relief.

The physical recovery from the surgery was laborious and demanding. Perry encountered numerous challenges adjusting to life with a prosthetic eye, which required additional surgeries due to complications. Beyond the physical hurdles, the emotional aftermath was severe, and she grappled with concerns about returning to a sense of “normal.”
Slowly, her perspective began to evolve. Instead of lamenting her situation, she began to consider the potential for something greater emerging from her experience. Inspired to help others, Perry started sharing her journey on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. What began as personal journal entries quickly garnered a wave of support, motivating her to create a community where individuals who had suffered similar losses could connect and find strength in one another.
In August 2021, Perry launched EYEHESIVE, originally intended as a space to share stories and resources for people affected by visual impairment. The initiative escalated quickly into a thriving community, providing a refuge of empowerment and connection. As the platform developed, so did Perry’s mission. “What if others don’t have this kind of support?” she reflected, which spurred her to create a network for those in need.
Recognising a gap in practical solutions for eye care, Perry embarked on a four-year journey to create adhesive eye patches that were both stylish and functional. Her experience of feeling dissatisfied with available options propelled her to design a product that met her needs and the needs of others in similar situations. Today, Perry is determined to sell one million adhesive eye patches worldwide while expanding visibility for EYEHESIVE across various platforms.
Perry’s journey has culminated in the development of what she calls the “One Eye Era,” a movement that encourages individuals to reclaim their narrative following life-altering events. She has seen first-hand how sharing her story has transformed people, inspiring them to embrace their unique challenges and view them as new beginnings rather than endings. Through shared stories and communal events, Perry has cultivated an environment where people can come together to discuss their experiences without fear.
Reflecting on her journey, Perry acknowledges that life-changing injuries, while deeply challenging, can also be the catalyst for profound personal growth. “Life-changing injuries are not the end; they are just the beginning,” she emphasises, encouraging others to consider how they want to reshape their futures in light of their experiences.
Today, through her unwavering commitment and the community she’s built, Shelby Perry stands as a testament to resilience and empowerment. The question she poses to those grappling with their own challenges is simple but powerful: “Who do you want to be moving forward?”
