A popular brand of ground cinnamon has been recalled across numerous states due to concerns over potential lead contamination. The announcement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 29 October 2025, has prompted customers to take action regarding the Wise Wife Brand Ground Cinnamon, produced by SLR Food Distribution Inc., based in Hicksville, New York.

The recall was initiated after elevated levels of lead were detected in samples of the product tested by Connecticut’s agricultural experiment station. Thankfully, no illnesses related to the consumption of the cinnamon have been reported thus far, but the FDA strongly advises consumers to refrain from using the affected product.

The ground cinnamon comes in 3.88-ounce clear plastic containers with a black screw-top lid. These products were distributed to various states, including Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The affected units, which display a Best Before date of 25 April 2027, can be identified by their UPC code 0688474302754.
SLR Food Distribution Inc. has ceased further distribution of the cinnamon and has instructed retailers to remove the product from their shelves immediately. Consumers who possess the recalled cinnamon are urged to either return the item to the point of purchase for a full refund or discard it safely.
The FDA has also provided important information regarding lead exposure. While short-term exposure to low levels of lead may not present obvious symptoms, blood tests may reveal increased lead levels as the only indicative sign. The agency emphasised that symptoms are more likely to arise from acute exposure to high lead levels or chronic exposure over time.
Lead exposure is a significant concern, particularly for children, as it can lead to central nervous system damage. This is often associated with learning disabilities, developmental delays, and a range of other long-term health issues. The FDA has advised parents and caregivers to be particularly vigilant.

Lead contamination incidents in spices, such as cinnamon, have been more frequent in recent years, according to the FDA. Just last month, another brand, Galil Importing Corp., implemented a recall on its Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning after similar concerns arose regarding lead levels.
As the situation continues to evolve, consumers are encouraged to remain informed about food safety recalls. A comprehensive list of affected brands and more details can be found on the FDA’s official website.
With the busy baking season approaching, it is crucial for consumers to check their supplies, particularly if they intend to use products like ground cinnamon. Public health officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely in order to safeguard consumers against the potential risks associated with lead exposure in food products.
