A man from Tennessee has been arrested under grave circumstances after allegedly setting fire to his mother’s home. Dustin Tayler Machen, 32, is currently in custody following the incident that took place on the morning of Thursday, April 9. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has reported details that paint a concerning picture of the events leading up to the fire.

According to authorities, the alleged arson occurred while Machen’s mother was in the process of evicting him from her home located on S. Pickens Bridge Road in Johnson City. The situation escalated when Machen reportedly returned to the residence with a container of petrol, which he then used to douse both his mother and the property. Witnesses claim that he attempted to prevent her from seeking help by destroying her mobile phone.
Fortunately, the woman managed to escape the dire situation and reached out to a nearby neighbour, who assisted her in calling for emergency services. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flames. The victim sustained burns to her arms during the incident and was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Sheriff Keith Sexton provided further insight into the case during an interview with local news outlets such as WJHL. He detailed how Machen had left the premises after the initial altercation but later returned to ignite the fire. “She was in the process of evicting her son, Dustin Machen,” Sexton stated. “At which time he left the residence, came back with a container of gasoline, proceeded to pour the gas on the victim and the house.”
After the fire broke out, deputies on patrol spotted Machen nearby. With the assistance of a drone, they located a backpack containing some of his personal belongings, suggesting he had been monitoring the blaze from a distance. The sheriff indicated that Machen had previous domestic violence charges against him related to the same victim, which further complicates the matter.
As a result of the incident, Machen has been charged with multiple serious offences, including attempted first-degree murder, attempted especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated arson, and aggravated burglary. He has also been charged with interference with a 911 call, reflecting the severity of his actions to prevent his mother from seeking help.
Currently, Machen is being held at the Washington County Detention Center without bond. At this stage, it remains unclear whether he has secured legal representation to comment on the charges he faces.
