Madison Lovelle is navigating an emotional odyssey as she cleans her childhood home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a place laden with memories and challenges. Following her father’s passing in June 2024, she has devoted the past year to tidying up the 1,200-square-foot condominium, which has long been a repository of her father’s hoarding tendencies. Her efforts serve as her final homage to him, aiming ultimately to convert the space into a rental property for her future income.

The condominium, featuring two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, was originally purchased by her parents in 1988, shortly before their divorce. Lovelle had not entered the home for 15 years prior to her father’s death, and the task of sorting through his possessions loomed large. With her father moving in with her after he suffered a stroke in 2023, she was faced with both the grief of loss and the daunting task of reclaiming the condo.

Lovelle, now 40, expressed the anxiety she felt knowing that she would eventually inherit her father’s clutter. Growing up, she often attempted to clean the space, only to be thwarted by her father’s refusal to part with items that were, to her, nothing more than junk. “Those who have dealt with a hoarder know how impossible it can be to encourage them to let go of anything,” she reflected.

After her father’s death, Lovelle briefly contemplated hiring a professional service to address the overwhelming amount of clutter. However, her memories of her father’s discomfort with outsiders in his home led her to decide on a more personal approach. With a blend of grief and a desire to honour him, she took on the extensive task herself.
Her first experience revisiting the condo was shocking. Upon entering, Lovelle was confronted by an overpowering smell of cat urine and was met with obstacles that blocked her path inside. “I stood there in complete disbelief and shock,” she recounted, revealing how emotional it was to face the remnants of her past head-on. The initial sight of the state of the home was enough to make her retreat on that day, but the desire to tackle the cleanup had been brewing for years.
Determined to make the process manageable, Lovelle devised a strategy. Rather than attempting to clear entire rooms at once, she focused on small sections. She began by limiting her work periods, gradually building her stamina until she was able to spend several hours per visit. She would often enlist the help of her husband and son, who could assist in hauling away rubbish at the end of each day.
The cleanup has not been without its surprises and challenges. Lovelle encountered not only piles of discarded paper but also unwanted pests, including a brown recluse spider infestation. Following advice from an exterminator, she equipped herself with protective gear—gloves, a respirator mask, and glasses—to safeguard against dust and potential contaminants.
As the condo has slowly transformed, Lovelle has unearthed unexpected treasures, from childhood keepsakes to bizarre finds like a collection of her father’s old teeth. Each item serves as a reminder of the complexities of her upbringing and her father’s life. Through her discoveries, she has begun to reconcile the feelings of shame she harboured during her childhood about her home’s condition.
With a year of cleaning nearly complete, Lovelle is closing in on her goal of emptying the condo. One final closet awaits attention, after which she plans to remodel the space for potential renters by spring 2027. Although she has invested about £15,000 in cleaning efforts thus far, the projected costs for remediation and renovations are expected to run significantly higher, possibly up to £100,000.
Throughout this arduous process, Lovelle has also taken a step back to reflect on her past. She began therapy to better cope with her feelings of grief and the childhood trauma linked to her father’s hoarding. Encouraged by her counsellor, she shared her experiences on TikTok, where her story resonated with many, leading her to cultivate a following of over 600,000 people.
Lovelle hopes her journey not only sheds light on the struggles faced by those living in similar environments but also serves as a reminder to viewers that everyone has battles they may face in private. She places great importance on self-care, ensuring that she maintains connections with loved ones and engages in activities that offer her solace from the emotional toll of her project.
In a world where mental health struggles are prevalent, Lovelle’s story stands as a testament to resilience and the healing power of confronting one’s past. As she pushes through the remnants of her childhood, she exemplifies the notion that it is possible to gather strength from the experiences that once felt painful and overwhelming.
