In a recent episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast, Awards Chatter, celebrated actor Harrison Ford opened up about a challenging period in his life during his college years. The 83-year-old star recounted his struggles with mental health and how a single drama class played a pivotal role in his recovery.

Ford, best known for iconic roles including Han Solo and Indiana Jones, described his time at Ripon College in Wisconsin as particularly dark. He candidly shared his experience with what he now recognises as severe depression. “I would get up out of my single bed, order a pizza and then lie back down until it arrived,” he reflected. This routine was indicative of his overall mental state, as he often isolated himself, rarely attending classes.

Looking back, Ford expressed that his condition went beyond simple sadness. “I was more than depressed. I think I was ill,” he stated, highlighting the significant toll that social disconnection and psychological distress had on him. The actor revealed that even when he did manage to leave his room, he often hesitated to enter the classroom, feeling overwhelmed by his mental state.
His turning point, however, came unexpectedly when he realised that his low academic performance necessitated improvement. In an attempt to raise his grade point average, he enrolled in a drama course, not fully appreciating what that would entail. Ford admitted to only skimming the course details which indicated an analysis of plays, without understanding that he would also be required to perform.
The experience proved transformative for the actor. While he initially perceived his classmates as misfits, he soon discovered that they were engaging in a powerful form of storytelling. “They were doing something that I hadn’t really understood… telling stories about life, and some of them were exceptional in their capacity to understand human behaviour,” he noted. It was through this realisation that Ford felt a sense of belonging among these ‘storytellers,’ as he put it.
This new-found community and creative outlet significantly enhanced his mental wellbeing. “It really changed my world, changed my life,” he remarked, crediting the drama class with helping him to connect with others and refine his understanding of human experiences. His foray into acting eventually paved the way for a remarkable career spanning over five decades, with numerous award-winning performances.
Today, Ford continues to contribute to the entertainment industry, recently appearing in the acclaimed Apple TV series Shrinking, alongside Jason Segel. The show concluded its third season on April 8, 2026, further adding to Ford’s legacy in Hollywood.
Ford’s candidness about his mental health resides within a broader context of increasing awareness surrounding mental health issues. Many celebrities have begun to speak out about their personal challenges, aiming to destigmatise these discussions and encourage others to seek help.
Through his reflections, Harrison Ford not only highlights his own journey but also serves as an inspiration for those grappling with similar struggles. By sharing his story, he emphasises the importance of finding a supportive community and the transformative power of engaging in creative pursuits, all of which can play a vital role in recovery.
