Eiza González, the star of the upcoming film ‘In the Grey’, recently opened up about her early fears and insecurities as a burgeoning actress in Hollywood. In a candid interview with Women’s Health magazine, the Mexico City-born talent revealed how her debut in the 2017 film ‘Baby Driver’ was a pivotal moment in her career. It marked her first major role conducted in English, a leap that initially filled her with self-doubt.

Reflecting on her experience, González, now 36, recounted feeling terrified at the prospect of acting in a language that was not her mother tongue. “I was very self-conscious about English not being my first language,” she admitted, highlighting the pressure she felt upon stepping into a world where fluency was crucial for authenticity. “I felt like I was just never going to have the naturality that it took,” she explained, emphasising the challenge of convincingly reacting in a non-native language.

Her transformation began when she moved from Mexico to Los Angeles in 2013, after gaining prominence in the Argentine-Mexican Nickelodeon sitcom ‘Sueña Conmigo’. González acknowledged that preparation and discipline were vital to overcoming her initial hurdles. She remarked, “It’s the preparation and discipline that really make the difference” when mastering a second language for an acting career.

Having faced linguistic barriers, the actress demonstrated a remarkable ability to embrace her talents, which led to a steady rise in Hollywood. Following her appearance in ‘Baby Driver’, where she starred alongside Ansel Elgort, González continued to solidify her place in the industry with roles in films such as ‘Bloodshot’ (2020), ‘Ambulance’ (2022), and ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ (2024). Her expanding portfolio is a testament to her relentless pursuit of excellence, regardless of the obstacles she faced.
However, the journey has not been without its challenges. In her interview, González bravely addressed her struggles with body image issues, including compulsive eating and body dysmorphia. She candidly reflected on these difficulties, stating, “Now with age and maturity, in hindsight, I’m like, I was really unwell.” The actress shared that her health issues stem from endometriosis, adenomyosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome, conditions that significantly impacted her physical and mental well-being.
Despite these struggles, González distinguished her journey from those of others who might have succumbed to substance abuse or addiction. “I never went down a rabbit hole of alcoholism or other addictions,” she noted, revealing a perspective shaped by her unique experiences. Instead, her battles were tied to her relationship with her own body, a complexity that many can relate to but few openly discuss.
Currently starring in ‘In the Grey’, directed by Guy Ritchie, González shares the screen with notable actors including Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, and Rosamund Pike. This heist thriller is set to hit theatres on May 15. Additionally, her commitment to her craft continues to blossom with other projects in the pipeline. A recently released Hulu series titled ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’ marks her foray into television, while the much-anticipated Season 2 of ‘3 Body Problem’ is expected to debut on Netflix later this year.
As Eiza González reflects on her growth from a self-conscious newcomer to a confident actress, she remains committed to her craft and the causes she believes in. Through her journey, she has become a role model for many, illustrating that with determination and discipline, barriers can be overcome, whether linguistic or personal. As she continues to break new ground in the film industry, her story inspires countless aspiring actors navigating their own paths.
