A newlywed student faced a distressing episode when she was arrested by military police shortly after attempting to register for spousal benefits at a U.S. Army base. Annie Ramos, a 22-year-old college student, was detained on April 2 at Fort Polk in Louisiana while accompanied by her husband, Staff Sergeant Matthew Blank, who serves in the Army.

The couple had visited the base to facilitate Ramos’s application for military benefits that she is entitled to as Blank’s spouse. Instead of receiving the assistance they sought, Ramos found herself in handcuffs and subsequently transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. After several days of uncertainty and anxiety, she was released on April 7.
In a heartfelt statement following her release, Ramos expressed her gratitude for the support she received throughout her ordeal. “I give thanks to God for carrying me through this moment. My faith never left me, even in the hardest hours,” she remarked, highlighting her resilience during the challenging time. She further acknowledged the unwavering support from her husband, family, and community, stating, “Because of them, I am home.”

Ramos, who arrived in the United States as a young child, is an undocumented immigrant from Honduras. She has lived in the country since she was less than two years old and has actively sought to regularise her status. Her husband, Blank, reiterated that Ramos had attempted to follow the legal path to citizenship, having applied for DACA in 2020. Despite fulfilling all necessary requirements, her application remains unresolved in a lengthy backlog.

Matthew Blank expressed his shock and sadness regarding the impact of the arrest, stating, “What was supposed to be the happiest week of our lives has turned into one of the hardest.” He described how his wife’s legal registration process took an unexpected turn, casting a shadow over their early days as a married couple. Blank is due to begin training at the Fort later this month, in preparation for an impending deployment, further complicating the couple’s plans for their future.
In response to inquiries about Ramos’s detention, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, defended the circumstances leading to her arrest. In their statement, they characterised Ramos as “an illegal alien” who had entered a military base unlawfully. DHS noted that Ramos had allegedly crossed the southern border in February 2005 and had not attended a subsequent immigration hearing, resulting in an ordered removal issued in April 2005.
Ramos’s immigration attorney, Jessie Schreier, provided context regarding the situation, highlighting that Ramos was only 20 months old at the time of the removal order—emphasising the complexities surrounding her immigration status. The DHS further encouraged undocumented immigrants to take advantage of a self-deportation offer, claiming it allows individuals to return to the U.S. through legal channels in the future.
Meanwhile, Blank and Ramos are attempting to navigate the emotional and logistical challenges presented by this ordeal. Ramos articulated her desire to continue her education, build a life with her husband, and contribute positively to her community, stating, “All I have ever wanted is to live with dignity in the country I have called home since I was a baby.”
The family’s sentiments towards Ramos reflect a deep appreciation for her character. Blank’s mother described Annie as kind, intelligent, and dedicated, stating, “She teaches Sunday school, she’s finishing her degree, and she loves my son with her whole heart. We absolutely adore her.” She expressed hope that the nation would do better for military families like hers, asserting the possibility for more humane treatment in light of the values they hold dear.
As the couple works towards securing Ramos’s immigration status and planning their future together, they remain hopeful that their love and the support from their community will see them through this tumultuous period. The experience has served as a poignant reminder of the complexities of immigration policies and their impact on individuals and families, particularly within the military community.
