There, it was determined that Willow was not microchipped and had likely been neglected for an extended period. “She was very underweight, and you could tell she hadn’t been cared for properly in a long time,” Jonas noted.
As the reality of Willow’s situation sank in, Jonas decided to reach out online, sharing her story and the mounting medical bills that would follow. Recognising the extent of Willow’s injuries following X-rays, veterinarians discovered catastrophic fractures in her leg, making amputation the only humane option. The staff at Partners for Pets attempted pain management strategies, but the severity of Willow’s condition left her in excruciating discomfort. Fortunately, the BISSELL Pet Foundation stepped in, providing financial assistance to cover the costs of her surgery through their Grateful Pet Program, which aims to support rescue animals.
Cathy Bissell, the foundation’s founder, expressed the organisation’s commitment to addressing the issues faced by abandoned pets. “Unfortunately, stories like Willow’s are not uncommon. Too many pets are abandoned, injured, and discarded by humans they trusted,” she lamented, emphasising the responsibility society has towards these animals.
After undergoing surgery, Willow showed remarkable resilience. Erika Pratte from Partners for Pets elaborated, “Willow was a wonderful patient! She has such a sweet disposition and is just your typical labby personality—happy to be here and make new friends!” Initially facing some challenges due to pain, Willow’s recovery swiftly progressed.
During her recovery phase, Derek Jonas opted to foster Willow, inviting her to live with his partner, Ivy Horton, their existing dog, and his children. The transition was seamless, with Willow quickly meshing into the family dynamic. Jonas reflected, “After her surgery, we almost immediately decided we wanted Willow forever.”
By Valentine’s Day, Jonas formalised his affection for Willow by adopting her from Partners for Pets, securing her place as a cherished member of his family. “Willow is absolutely perfect in every aspect,” he stated, highlighting her quirks, such as indulging in lazy afternoons on the sofa and engaging in playful antics, all while enjoying the companionship of her new family.
