In an unexpected turn of events during her sister-in-law’s bachelorette celebration in Chicago last summer, Gabby Langan discovered that she has a severe allergy to synthetic wigs. This revelation occurred on the evening of July 18, while the group was enjoying a “wig night” at their rented Airbnb.

The festivities began with everyone trying on various wigs, taking photographs, and sharing laughs over their amusing appearances. However, Langan, aged 24, began to feel unwell shortly after donning a hot pink wig purchased from Amazon. Initially, the bangs were a minor irritation, but within ten minutes, her eyes became exceedingly watery and itchy.

Having lived with a nut allergy and sensitive skin throughout her life, Langan recognised the symptoms as a potential allergic reaction. Yet, she was baffled since she had not consumed any food that might trigger her typical reactions, as several hours had passed since her last meal. “At first, I tried to play it off so I didn’t ruin the moment,” she recounted. Langan took a Claritin in an attempt to alleviate her symptoms but realised she was not improving.
As the group attempted to shoot a TikTok video, Langan could no longer maintain her façade of well-being. She mentioned her discomfort to the others but was met with blank stares; no one else seemed to be experiencing any issues. Stepping away to inspect her reflection in the bathroom, she was startled to find that her eyes had swollen significantly. “They weren’t just a little red, they were fully swollen,” she shared.
Wearing heart-shaped sunglasses at the time, Langan managed to conceal her discomfort for a while. However, it soon became apparent that her condition was deteriorating as her eyes began to swell further. Despite her sister-in-law’s concern and an immediate suggestion to cancel the celebration and seek medical attention, Langan chose to stay behind. “In hindsight, I definitely should have gone to a doctor,” she admitted later. “But at the time, I was just hoping I could sleep it off.”
In a bid to ease her symptoms, she took a Benadryl before retiring for the night. Unfortunately, the following morning revealed an even more alarming situation; Langan awoke to eyes that felt heavy and cumbersome. At around 5 a.m., she turned to her sister for reassurance, who gently broke the news that her condition had worsened.
Despite her swollen appearance, Langan opted to continue participating in the festivities, donning sunglasses in an effort to hide her predicament. She felt that it was important not to detract from her sister-in-law’s special occasion. Even with the swelling persisting for two days, she chose to maintain a sense of humour about the experience, discarding the wig as a reminder of her misadventure.
Langan later shared snippets of her ordeal on TikTok, leading to a wave of attention. Her post quickly garnered over 2.5 million views and around 370,000 likes. Many users expressed their surprise, having been unaware that a wig allergy was even possible. Comments ranged from disbelief to sympathy, with one user exclaiming, “What a terrible way to learn this information.”
Reflecting on her experience, Langan concluded, “Safe to say when it’s my turn, wig night will not be on the itinerary.” Her story serves as a cautionary tale, reminding others to always be aware of potential allergies and to seek medical advice when unexpected reactions occur.
