The MSC Meraviglia is currently facing a plumbing crisis during a seven-night cruise to the Bahamas, which commenced its journey from New York on Sunday, March 15. Passengers aboard the ship, which has the capacity for 5,642 guests and 1,608 crew members, have reported issues with the vessel’s toilet flushing system.

According to reports, the maintenance problem originated after a guest allegedly flushed a cotton towel down one of the toilets in their stateroom. This action resulted in a blockage, damaging the associated extraction pump, prompting the cruise line’s engineering team to take swift action to remedy the situation.
Details of the incident were shared in a letter distributed to passengers, which indicated that the ship’s toilet flush system had been affected in several areas. “We are currently facing a technical issue that is affecting the operation of our toilet flush system in different areas of the ship,” the letter stated.
The communication went on to explain, “Unfortunately, this malfunctioning has been caused by somebody that flushed a large cotton towel down the toilet, causing a blockage of the line that overloaded the extraction pump, which was subsequently damaged.” The letter reassured passengers that engineers were working diligently to resolve the issue, stressing their commitment to keep passengers informed as they worked towards restoring normal operations.
In light of the incident, MSC Cruises took the opportunity to remind all guests to refrain from disposing of anything beyond toilet paper in the ship’s lavatories. However, some passengers have voiced concerns over the plumbing issues, suggesting that these problems are not limited to this singular incident and may point to broader ongoing maintenance failures.
One disgruntled guest expressed scepticism regarding the company’s explanation about the towel. They stated, “I call BS about the towel. That ship has constant sewage issues and stinks terrible on certain floors. The shower also smelled like cat urine.” This sentiment resonates with other reports from passengers who have expressed dissatisfaction, indicating unpleasant odours in several locations throughout the ship.
The cruise vessel has previously attracted attention for its health and safety standards. During a CDC Health and Safety inspection conducted in December 2025, the MSC Meraviglia received a score of 86, which is notably the lowest passing mark. This inspection has raised further questions about the ship’s overall maintenance and hygiene standards.
Despite these challenges, the cruise has continued on its scheduled itinerary without significant delays. Passengers are still enjoying their time at sea and engaging in various onboard activities, although the ongoing plumbing concerns are understandably causing some discomfort and frustration.
MSC Cruises has not yet publicly addressed the latest allegations or the more extensive claims of continual issues on board. As the situation develops, passengers are left hoping for a swift resolution to the plumbing debacle, so their holiday can return to normal without further complications.
In the meantime, it remains to be seen how MSC Cruises will handle the aftermath of this situation and whether additional measures will be taken to ensure the comfort and safety of their guests aboard the MSC Meraviglia. As passengers continue to navigate these plumbing issues, many are left contemplating both their experience and the reputation of the cruise line as a whole.
