Three teenagers from Mississippi are currently recovering after a harrowing car accident that left their vehicle upside down in a canal. The incident occurred when their car veered off the I-10 highway, flipping three times before landing in water. The siblings—Mariah, Michael, and Matthew Gill—were inside the vehicle when the crash took place.

Eyewitness J.D. Durant, who was travelling eastbound on the same road along with his son and a colleague, described the traumatic scene. “When the car started flipping, I feared for their safety,” he recounted to local news outlets. Alongside his companions, Durant was quick to pull over to assist the teenagers, who were in dire need of help.
As the vehicle came to rest, Mariah, the eldest sibling and the driver, could hear her brothers screaming about the rising water inside. “I could hear my brothers yelling, ‘Water is coming in,'” she recalled in an interview. Despite the panic, Mariah and her brothers managed to escape from the vehicle, prompting nearby passers-by to come to their aid. With the help of around 15 motorists who halted their journeys, Mariah was safely extracted from the overturned car.

Authorities have confirmed that the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department identified a suspected vehicle that was likely involved in the incident. However, further investigations are now under the jurisdiction of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. At the time of writing, the patrol has not yet responded to requests for commentary on the ongoing investigation.

The family believes another car may have contributed to the crash, but details remain unclear pending the formal investigation. Local community members have rallied around the Gill family during this distressing time. Laia Garside, who co-owns Long Beach Screen Printing with the children’s stepfather, has kept the public informed about the situation through social media platforms, where she shares updates about the siblings’ recovery.
In a show of solidarity, Garside has also initiated a GoFundMe campaign aimed at aiding the family’s recovery process and replacing their damaged vehicle. Through the fundraiser, supporters have the opportunity to contribute towards the siblings’ medical expenses and assist them in getting back on their feet after the traumatic experience.
As the local community continues to provide support, Mariah, Michael, and Matthew are focusing on their recovery and well-being. The incident not only serves as a reminder of the dangers present on roadways but also highlights the kindness of strangers, as many individuals came together in a time of need.
With the ongoing investigation, authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward. As the Gill siblings recuperate, they are surrounded by love and support from friends, family, and their community, showcasing the resilience that often shines through in difficult times.
