In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the Mott Haven Elementary School in Dallas witnessed an outpouring of support for one of its most dedicated members, Trecia Crawford, affectionately known as Ms. Crawford. For the past five months, Crawford has been without a working vehicle after hers broke down, resorting to public transport for her daily commute to school.

Trecia Crawford has long been a familiar presence at Mott Haven Elementary, serving as the school’s crossing guard and developing close relationships with students and parents alike. “I was Lyfting here, and then when I ran out of money, I had to get on the bus,” Crawford shared with local media outlet KTVT-TV. Her resilience has shone through as she navigated these challenges, committed to ensuring the safety of the children crossing the road each day.
Upon learning about Ms. Crawford’s transportation struggles, a dedicated group of fathers from the Mott Haven Elementary Dad’s Club decided it was time to take action. The club, a registered non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the school, quickly organised a fundraising campaign to assist Crawford in obtaining a new vehicle. “She’s out here every morning, every afternoon,” remarked club member Marcus Walther. “She probably knows more parents on a first-name basis than most people.”
Motivated by Crawford’s unwavering dedication, Walther proposed the idea of a fundraiser, and within a short period, the “Carpool Dads” managed to raise an impressive £5,500, or $6,800. Their efforts, however, did not rest on raising funds alone; the community’s generosity took on an additional, tangible form through the expertise of one of the members.
Adam Tharpe, a fellow dad and general manager of Lake Highland Automotive, played a pivotal role in the initiative by sourcing a white Jeep for Crawford. Tharpe not only secured the vehicle at a significantly reduced price but also ensured it was in excellent condition prior to the handover, offering additional incentives like free oil changes in the process.
The generosity of the community did not stop there. Another member of the Dad’s Club, Jeremy Graves, took on the responsibility of securing auto insurance for Crawford, ensuring that she was fully supported in her new endeavour. “It’s hard not to go on and on about the amazing community we have in the Moss Haven neighbourhood,” Tharpe expressed. “Much of which is due to the amazing team that shows up every day to love on our kids, keep them safe, and be all-around amazing role models. Ms. Crawford is a great example of that.”
The highlight of the endeavour came during a surprise event where the fathers unveiled the new car to Crawford. In a touching moment captured on video, Crawford was visibly moved, covering her mouth in disbelief as she took in the generosity of the community. The school district shared the footage on Facebook, emphasising that “community isn’t just a buzzword,” but rather the embodiment of action, time, and commitment from all involved.
