According to a recent report, the number of unprovoked shark attacks has seen a significant rise globally, with the United States leading the statistics. In 2025, there were 65 recorded instances of such bites, resulting in nine fatalities—more than double the four deaths logged in the previous year, 2024. This sharp increase of 125% in deaths from unprovoked shark attacks signals a troubling trend that experts are keen to address.

The data, compiled by the Florida Museum of Natural History in its annual International Shark Attack File, indicates that the United States accounted for the majority of these incidents, reporting 25 unprovoked attacks—equating to 38% of the global total. Leading the way within the U.S. was the state of Florida, which saw 11 unprovoked bites, a statistic that, while notable, is actually below its five-year average of 19 incidents.
Among the fatalities was the tragic case of swimmer Erica Fox, who lost her life in December 2025 while swimming in Santa Cruz, California. This incident highlights the dangers posed by sharks in certain coastal areas, leading authorities to contemplate measures to enhance safety for beachgoers and water enthusiasts alike.

Despite the concerning increase in fatal attacks, the report does indicate a certain level of historical context, noting that several years in the past have witnessed similar or even higher fatality rates. Florida remains a major focal point for shark attacks, particularly in Volusia County, which is known as the “Shark Bite Capital of the World,” with New Smyrna Beach being identified as a hot-spot for such incidents. The recent figures confirm that Florida accounted for 17% of all unprovoked shark bites globally in 2025. The report also highlights that many of these incidents involved swimmers and waders, comprising 46% of the total attacks, suggesting that those engaged in shallow water activities are at greater risk.
Following Florida, Australia reported the second highest number of unprovoked shark incidents, with 21 recorded attacks—substantially higher than the nation’s recent average of 13. The rise in Australian incidents reflects a growing concern regarding shark encounters, triggering debates around marine safety and wildlife conservation efforts.
Other states within the U.S. that recorded unprovoked shark bites included California, Hawaii, South Carolina, New York, North Carolina, and Texas. The variety of locations affected underscores that shark encounters can occur in diverse geographical areas, not limited to traditional hotspots.
Most of the shark-related fatalities were attributed to bites from great white sharks, with four deaths linked to these formidable predators—three in Australia and one in California. The data reinforces the understanding that while all sharks pose some risk, great white sharks, and their relatives are implicated in most severe incidents.
