In ongoing legal disputes surrounding the infamous 2007 sex tape featuring Kim Kardashian and Ray J, both Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, have publicly rejected claims made by Ray J that they orchestrated the tape’s release. In court filings submitted on 10 March, the pair described the allegations as categorically false and expressed their deep emotional distress over the situation.

Ray J, a 45-year-old singer, has asserted that both Kardashian and Jenner were involved in intentionally leaking the tape to further their own careers. His claims prompted Kardashian and Jenner to initiate a defamation lawsuit against him in October 2025. The duo has argued that Ray J’s assertions are not only untrue but also damaging to their reputations.

In her declaration to the court, Kardashian stated, “I have incurred expenses to combat [Ray J’s] lies and manage my wellbeing,” adding that she has sought therapy and worked with legal and communication experts to address the fallout from his accusations. She vehemently denied any intent or strategy to fake the release of the tape for publicity or financial gain.
Kris Jenner echoed her daughter’s sentiments, labelling Ray J’s claims as “absolutely false.” According to her statements, she had neither encouraged nor facilitated the filming or distribution of any sex tapes featuring Kardashian. “The notion that I orchestrated or produced sex tapes involving my daughter… is not only entirely untrue but deeply offensive and harmful,” said Jenner.
The sex tape was released in May 2007, igniting Kardashian’s rise to fame and leading to the debut of the family’s reality television series, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” later that year. In their latest court declarations, both Kardashian and Jenner also refuted Ray J’s claims of racketeering and RICO violations, which he discussed in interviews earlier in 2025.
The legal confrontation began in earnest when Kardashian and Jenner accused Ray J of making defamatory statements about them, which they argue lacked any factual basis. Their attorney, Alex Spiro, noted that this was not the first time the family had faced such accusations, but Ray J’s allegations were particularly damaging and warranted legal action.
In turn, Ray J filed a response and cross-complaint against the mother-daughter duo, denying all charges. He described their lawsuit as a “public relations charade”, asserting that it was filled with malicious falsehoods rather than genuine claims of defamation. Furthermore, he has suggested that Kardashian and Jenner violated a previous settlement agreement relating to the sex tape.
Ray J has maintained that the tape was consensually filmed in 2003 and that discussions about its release began in 2006. He alleges that Kardashian had expressed the desire for her mother to manage the release, suggesting a more complex narrative than has previously been shared. His cross-complaint included accusations that the family had fabricated a new controversy surrounding the tape to generate publicity related to their Hulu series “The Kardashians.”
In conjunction with their previous claims, the lawsuit has drawn attention to statements made on the reality show involving accusations against Ray J of extortion. The legal battles have seen Ray J stating that his business interests have suffered due to the allegations made against him, and he is seeking $1 million in damages, as well as attorneys’ fees.
Ray J’s legal representative, Howard King, called Kardashian’s statements “demonstrably false,” threatening potential criminal prosecution for perjury if she does not substantiate her claims. He questioned her credibility as she seeks to obtain her legal qualifications for the California bar.
Both parties are urging the court to dismiss the other’s claims, with a hearing on Ray J’s motion for dismissal having taken place last week. A ruling on this matter is anticipated soon, with legal representatives from all involved parties prepared to respond to the outcomes.
As the case continues to unfold, it highlights the complexities surrounding public personas and the intimate details of personal lives that have been thrust into the public eye. The Kardashian-Jenner family remains adamant about protecting their reputation, while Ray J seeks to counter what he describes as a flawed narrative surrounding an incident that has lingered in the media for over 15 years.
