In a dramatic turn of events, a Russian tourist found himself stranded at sea for nearly a full day after a surfing outing in Bali took a perilous turn. Sixty-four-year-old Iurii Orlov was enjoying a day of surfing with friends on March 5 when strong currents swept him far from shore, leaving him isolated in the open ocean.

Orlov’s misadventure began as he rode the waves, but he quickly became overwhelmed by the force of the water. As hours passed and daylight began to fade, he remained adrift on his surfboard, battling fatigue and uncertainty. Remarkably, he managed to stay afloat for approximately 20 hours until a local fisherman came to his aid.
The rescue unfolded dramatically as Agus Putra Yohana, a 34-year-old fisherman, spotted Orlov from his boat. Initially mistaking the surfboard for a lost item intended for his child, it was only upon approaching that he realised there was a person clinging to it. Footage of the encounter captured Yohana’s initial greeting, “Hello! What are you doing?” to which Orlov simply responded, “I am tired.”
Local authorities, alerted to Orlov’s disappearance, initiated a search and rescue operation earlier in the day. According to Nyoman Sidakarya, head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, they received the first call for help around 1:55 PM local time. However, their efforts were hampered by unsuccessful initial searches, putting Orlov’s situation into a more critical perspective.
The intervention of Yohana and his fellow fishermen proved to be pivotal. They not only located Orlov but also assisted in bringing him back to safety. Upon his return to the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel in South Kuta, where he had been staying, Orlov was found to have sustained only minor injuries, a fortunate outcome considering the length of time he spent at sea.
Authorities highlighted the importance of the swift local response. “After receiving information from the public, our officers immediately went to the location to check his condition and secure the surrounding waters,” stated AKP Gede Budarasa, who oversees the Gianyar Satpolairud unit. Following his rescue, Orlov received preliminary medical attention, ensuring that he was physically stable after the distressing ordeal.
Orlov’s story resonates as a cautionary tale about the unpredictability of ocean conditions, particularly in a region known for its surf culture. While many tourists flock to Bali to enjoy its beautiful beaches and water activities, this incident serves as a reminder that even experienced surfers can find themselves in challenging situations.
Thanks to the prompt actions of local fishermen and the response from search and rescue teams, this story concludes on a positive note. Orlov’s experience underscores the community spirit and vigilant nature of those who operate in close proximity to the ocean.
Visitors to Bali are encouraged to approach water sports with caution and to heed safety warnings, ensuring that their adventures remain memorable for all the right reasons.
