A routine dog walk took an unexpected turn for Mackenzie Icenogle when her four-year-old dog, Tulip, brought an uninvited guest along for the journey. In an astonishing encounter, a mouse climbed up Icenogle’s leg and found refuge in her hair after being startled by the playful antics of her dog.

The incident unfolded as Icenogle took Tulip outside for a bathroom break. While the dog was attempting to do her business, she inadvertently stepped on a mouse hidden in the grass. Both Tulip and the mouse were taken aback by the sudden clash, leaping into the air in surprise.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Icenogle reflected on the moment. The frightened mouse, in an instinctual response to flee, scurried up her leg and finally settled on her head, causing quite the scene. “In an effort to run away, the mouse decided to climb up my leg, making its way to my head, and perching on me, not wanting to get down,” she explained.

Icenogle described the tiny creature’s beady eyes peering back at her as it nestled among her hair. “Luckily, since I saw what it was before feeling it, it helped me stay calmer in that situation,” she said, adding that she would have likely panicked more if it had been a different animal, such as a spider or snake. “It did have a very cute face!” she noted, acknowledging the absurdity of the situation.
For the first minute, Icenogle found herself alone outside, screaming in shock, while the mouse clung to her hair. Realising that she needed to regain her composure, she quickly decided it was best to focus on calming both Tulip and herself rather than further alarming the mouse or her neighbours. “My instincts kicked in once I stopped screaming, and I realised I needed to stay as calm as possible,” she recounted.
Being seven months pregnant added another layer of concern for Icenogle. She feared a potential bite or accident from her dog and worried about the implications of needing a rabies shot. “Not only that, but I was also thinking of getting bitten, or pooped and peed on. Being seven months pregnant, a rabies shot was the last thing I wanted to have to get done,” she shared.
Ultimately, Icenogle made her way back inside the house to seek assistance from her mother, who was preoccupied with her other daughter at the time. Before heading indoors, she had the foresight to capture a quick photograph of the mouse perched on her head. Unbeknownst to her, her mother was recording the entire incident on video.
After sharing the unbelievable moment with friends, they encouraged Icenogle to post the footage on TikTok, believing it would garner significant attention. In the video, viewers can see the mouse nestled in her hair before Icenogle tilts her head and shakes it out, with her mother playfully tapping a package nearby.
When asked why she chose to wait until they were back at the front door to remove the mouse, Icenogle responded, “I had to show my mum because I knew no one would believe me. I think I have a better chance of winning the lottery than this ever happening to me again. It makes for a fun and traumatising story.”
This uncommon encounter has turned into an amusing anecdote for both Icenogle and her friends, showcasing the unpredictable nature of outdoor excursions with pets. The story serves as a reminder of the surprises that can occur in seemingly mundane moments and how a simple dog walk can lead to an unforgettable experience.
