Actress Zooey Deschanel recently shed light on her experience working with canine co-stars in the new romantic comedy ‘Merv,’ in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. The ‘Elf’ star, alongside Charlie Cox and an endearing terrier mix, takes on the lead role in the film.

Deschanel revealed that acting alongside dogs was not as straightforward as one might imagine. The animal lover expressed that the dogs on set were quite serious and professional. She emphasised that contrary to popular belief, actors weren’t allowed to snuggle with the dogs during filming. Deschanel remarked, “The dogs are very serious. It’s not like you’re getting to snuggle them. In fact, you’re not allowed to when they’re working. Yeah, it’s not what you think.”

In ‘Merv,’ Deschanel and co-star Charlie Cox portray exes who share custody of their beloved pet. However, the dog, Merv, becomes despondent as a result of their broken relationship. Deschanel shared that while filming the movie was enjoyable, it presented unique challenges. She recounted instances when scenes had to be executed amidst coordinating the canine actor’s actions, adding a whole new layer of complexity to the process.
Multiple dogs were involved in portraying Merv on-screen, with Gus, a rescue terrier mix, being the primary star. Director Jessica Swale detailed the meticulous process of selecting Gus, highlighting his ideal size and temperament for the role. Swale explained the intricacies of capturing emotional scenes with dogs on camera, noting that certain breeds were better suited for particular scenarios.
Deschanel expressed admiration for Gus’s professionalism and impeccable behaviour throughout filming, noting that he outshone many human counterparts. The actress, a proud owner of three cats herself, found the premise of ‘Merv’ endearing and relatable. Exploring the dynamics of shared pet custody post-breakup resonated with Deschanel as a common real-life scenario.
‘Merv’ offers a heartwarming narrative set during a Florida vacation, hinting at a potential reconciliation between the characters amidst a holiday backdrop. Swale described the film as a perfect winter watch, blending humour, romance, and a charming canine companion. With the movie now available for streaming on Prime Video, viewers can indulge in the festive spirit and emotional journey of ‘Merv.’
The collaboration between Deschanel, Cox, and the delightful dog actors in ‘Merv’ underscores the intricate and engaging nature of working with animals in the entertainment industry. As audiences immerse themselves in the on-screen chemistry and heartwarming storylines, the film portrays a blend of human emotions and the unwavering bond between humans and their furry companions.
