Claire Danes Shares Challenge of Tapping Into Maternal Instincts for ‘The Beast in Me’ Role

Acclaimed actress Claire Danes recently opened up about the emotional depth she had to reach to portray Aggie Wiggs in Netflix’s latest production, ‘The Beast In Me’. During a special screening for the show at The Plaza Hotel, Danes shared with PEOPLE that she faced a significant challenge in tapping into her maternal instincts for the role.
The 46-year-old star admitted that she was not initially looking forward to delving into the grief-stricken character of Aggie, a mother mourning the loss of her son. Danes expressed, “Unfortunately, yes. That was unavoidable. I was not looking forward to that element of the character. It really is every parent’s most dreaded nightmare. But it was essential to who she was, and it drives her. I read a number of books about maternal grief and just…that’s the job.”
As a mother of three children herself, including sons Rowan, 7, and Cyrus, 12, and a daughter, Danes had to draw from her own experiences in navigating the complexities of parenthood. Her children are shared with husband Hugh Dancy, whom she met on the set of the film ‘Evening’ in 2007 and has been married to since 2009.
This is not the first time Danes has drawn on her role as a mother for her acting. In 2018, she discussed her portrayal in ‘A Kid Like Jake’, where she played a mother of a gender-expansive child. Danes felt a personal connection to the character, stating, “I certainly understand what it is to have anxiety about him being safe in the world and being identified as other in some way.”
While Danes and Dancy maintain their children’s privacy, they occasionally share humorous anecdotes about parenting in interviews. Reflecting on welcoming their daughter into the family, Danes revealed on The Tonight Show in 2023 that her son Rowan was initially reluctant about having a new sibling, suggesting giving the baby to another family. However, through conversations about the baby’s infancy and need for care, he became more receptive and engaged.
At the Golden Globes that same year, Danes hinted that their third child might be their last, revealing that the pregnancy was unexpected but a joyous surprise. The couple shared their excitement about expanding their family, despite the unexpected nature of their latest addition.
