Paul Tagliabue, the former NFL commissioner who led the league for 17 years, has passed away at the age of 84. The NFL confirmed his death, citing apparent heart failure as the cause. Tagliabue served as commissioner from 1989 until 2006 when he was succeeded by Roger Goodell. He passed away in the early hours of November 9 at his residence in Chevy Chase, Maryland. His family shared that his heart failure was complicated by Parkinson’s disease.
Upon the news of Tagliabue’s passing, Roger Goodell, the current NFL commissioner, paid tribute to his late predecessor. Goodell described Tagliabue as “the ultimate steward of the game,” highlighting his humility, loyalty to the NFL, and significant impact on the league during his tenure. In 2020, Paul Tagliabue was honoured with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a contributor, solidifying his legacy in the NFL. During his induction speech, Tagliabue emphasised the significance of NFL players and their exemplary qualities, acknowledging their role as leaders in sports and society. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Chandler, as well as their children, Andrew and Emily.
