A tragic incident in the Bronx has left a family grieving the loss of their two-year-old daughter, Julia Wilcox-Polanco, who fell from the fifth floor of their apartment building on 3 November. According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Julia’s fall appeared to be accidental and resulted from her pushing through an accordion-style divider situated near a window air conditioning unit.

Emergency services responded to the scene following a 911 call made at approximately 10:45 p.m. Upon arrival, police found Julia unconscious and unresponsive. She was transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Harlem, but sadly, despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

In an emotional interview, Julia’s parents, Thessa Wilcox and Chayanne Polanco, recounted the devastating moment. Thessa described how she briefly left the room only to discover via the baby monitor that her daughter was no longer in sight. “I ran back, but she was not there… she was out the window,” she shared, still in shock over the incident.
Chayanne Polanco, who was returning home from electrician training, spoke of his disbelief upon learning of his daughter’s fall. “I thought it was a hoax. I thought it was someone else,” he recalled, highlighting the surreal nature of the tragedy.
Reports indicate that Julia’s fall was precipitated by her curiosity. Her father explained that she had managed to push through the accordion divider for the first time, leading to the fatal accident. Both parents expressed concerns about the lack of window guards in their apartment. Polanco noted that other units in the building had safety measures, but their attempts to install similar protections had not been successful in time.
The couple described Julia as their “miracle child,” a much-loved daughter born after experiencing a miscarriage. “She was a very bubbly kid,” Polanco said, painting a picture of a lively toddler who loved to explore. Just weeks prior to the tragic incident, the family celebrated Julia’s first Halloween with joy, a moment they will cherish amid their sorrow.
In light of their loss, Wilcox and Polanco have started a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral costs and transport Julia’s body to their family burial site in South Dakota. “I’ve been too sad to leave my bed because I can’t believe it’s real,” Wilcox admitted, expressing profound grief over the situation. She urged other parents to be vigilant with their children, advocating for awareness regarding child safety.
The NYPD has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, but early indications suggest no foul play was involved in this heartbreaking incident. The family’s plea to other parents underscores the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring a secure home environment to prevent similar tragedies.
Julia Wilcox-Polanco’s life, though tragically short, was filled with love and joy, and her family hopes that by sharing her story, they can bring attention to child safety measures that might save others from a similar fate.
