In a remarkable turn of events, an officer from the Wilmington Police Department stepped up to assist a local mother during an unexpected childbirth at home. Officer Jack Rooney found himself in a unique situation on October 28, when he helped deliver baby Oliver after Tatiana Topala’s contractions progressed too quickly for her to reach hospital care.

At approximately 2:28 a.m., Topala began experiencing contractions. Unable to leave her home on Lowell Street with her husband, Dennis Gotonaga, they called for help. Emergency dispatchers Jared Winston and Joseph Leverone quickly responded, calmly providing guidance as the situation escalated. Their professionalism was instrumental in ensuring that Topala was supported while awaiting the arrival of police officers.
Officer Rooney, who had only graduated from the police academy five months earlier, was the first on the scene. He took charge of the unfolding situation and provided reassuring words to Topala as she prepared for delivery. Officer Kyle Collins arrived shortly thereafter to assist, further solidifying their efforts to ensure the safety of both mother and child.
According to police reports, baby Oliver was born just two minutes after Officer Rooney’s arrival at around 2:30 a.m. To provide further assistance, the Wilmington Fire Department and Action Ambulance Services were called to transport Topala and her newborn to a nearby hospital for a precautionary check-up.
The Wilmington Police Department praised the collaborative efforts of its officers, dispatchers, and public safety partners for their exemplary conduct during the incident. “The teamwork, professionalism, and compassion demonstrated in this call are commendable,” the department stated in a press release.
In a heartfelt reunion on November 5, Topala and her family met with Officer Rooney and Officer Collins at the Wilmington Public Safety Building, where they expressed their gratitude. Topala described the experience as “intense” but was thankful for the calm demeanour of the first responders, which helped to ease her anxiety during the delivery.
“I knew that between contractions, I had to make it to another floor,” Topala recounted in a conversation with a local news outlet. Given their three-story residence, she was preparing to navigate the stairs when help arrived. “I felt a lot of pressure, and I understood that this is it,” she added.
Rooney, reflecting on the unusual circumstances of the birth, noted that he was trying to recall the brief training provided during his academy days. “It’s something you think will never happen to you,” he stated. This delivery marked his first experience aiding in childbirth, a scenario he had never anticipated facing so soon into his police career.
Paramedic Steve Betman, who was among the first responders, described the immediate care provided to the newborn. “We dried him off, got him bundled up, and put him right on mummy’s chest to allow them a moment together before we organised the next steps,” he explained, highlighting the importance of ensuring both mother and child were comfortable.
Topala expressed profound gratitude for the swift actions of the officers and paramedics. “I’m really grateful that the police officers were right around the corner,” she remarked. “This happened exactly how it needed to happen.”
This incident has not only highlighted the dedication of the Wilmington Police Department but also exemplified the importance of community support during critical situations. The successful delivery of baby Oliver stands as a testament to the quick response and teamwork of first responders, emphasising their vital role in ensuring the safety of residents.
In the days following the birth, the heartwarming story has resonated widely within the community, as grateful locals celebrate the bonds formed between families and their protectors during moments of crisis. For Topala and Gotonaga, this extraordinary experience has forged a lasting appreciation for the officers who played an instrumental part in one of their family’s most significant moments.
