Musician Steven Van Zandt, renowned for his role in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, has opened up about his decision not to have children with his wife Maureen, a union that has lasted over four decades. In a recent interview on the podcast *Glass Half Full*, hosted by Craig Melvin, Van Zandt candidly discussed the thoughts he has regarding parenthood and the factors that influenced their choice.

Married since 1982, Van Zandt, now 75, acknowledged that his frequent touring and financial uncertainties led him to hesitate when it came to starting a family. “I think about it now and then,” he admitted. “I just wasn’t home enough, you know, travelling all the time. And honestly, Craig, I never felt financially secure enough to have a kid. I’m telling the truth.”
His reflections on parenthood stem from years spent on the road and the instability that often accompanies a career in music. Notably, he left the E Street Band in 1984, just before a significant phase in Springsteen’s career, when they were poised to perform at stadiums. Van Zandt left to raise awareness about apartheid in South Africa, returning to the band in 1999.
During his period away from the E Street Band, he pursued his own projects with an 11-piece band, which he described as financially demanding. When Melvin commented on the missed opportunities for financial gain, Van Zandt responded thoughtfully, “And looking back, I would not change a thing in terms of what I ended up accomplishing because it was important. No doubt about it.”
Aside from his musical career, Van Zandt emphasised the importance of maintaining individual identities within a long-term relationship. He noted, “As I often say, the key to staying together is to stay apart. We’ve been together, God, what is it now, 40-plus years and probably have spent about 10 years of that together out of the 40, because I’m always on the road.” This approach, he believes, keeps their relationship fresh and dynamic.
Maureen, 74, has carved her own successful path as an actor and former ballerina, while also engaging in various creative projects. Van Zandt spoke highly of her contributions to the arts, stating, “She’s a very, very strong person. She has a theatre company. She’s the real actor in the family. She’s the real thing.” Her commitment to her craft includes teaching acting at the American Ballet Theater, showcasing her dedication to the performing arts.
The couple’s ability to thrive individually has shaped their union, with Van Zandt asserting the significance of preserving one’s identity in a partnership. “I think finding a way to keep one’s identity and making sure that one plus one equals three rather than one plus one equals one-and-a-half is essential,” he explained. This principle counteracts the tendency for relationships to become limiting when partners lose their individualism.
As Van Zandt contemplates parenthood in hindsight, he maintains a sense of pride in their accomplished marriage. Their shared journeys, filled with creativity and the complexities of a musician’s life, have fostered an enduring bond. The couple’s dynamic is a testament to how love and respect for one another’s passions can result in a fulfilling partnership.
In a world often driven by traditional expectations, Van Zandt and Maureen’s relationship challenges notions of family and success. Their commitment to personal growth and understanding what it means to support one another while pursuing individual dreams showcases a modern approach to love and companionship.
As Steven Van Zandt continues his musical career and remains active in the industry, he leaves the door open for exploration, retaining an enduring relationship with his wife that stands as a rare example in the world of rock music.
