In a recent episode of *The Rock* podcast, Dave Grohl, frontman of the Foo Fighters, shared details of his heartfelt experience performing alongside legendary rock band AC/DC. During the show’s airing on Sunday, November 1st, Grohl described this moment as one of the most significant of his illustrious career.

The special performance took place on October 2nd at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Grohl stepped in for The Pretty Reckless, who were unable to perform, and joined AC/DC on guitar and backing vocals. The musical collaboration left a lasting impression on Grohl, who expressed his disbelief at the opportunity to play with such iconic musicians.

Grohl’s excitement was palpable as he spoke about the experience. He described it as “unbelievable” and recounted how overwhelming it was to perform AC/DC’s classic hit “Highway to Hell.” He emotionally reflected on the moment his wife was present at the side of the stage, stating, “I walked off stage, and I broke down in tears, sobbing like a baby. I was sobbing, like wailing, and I couldn’t believe it. I was, like, ‘That is one of the most full-circle moments of my entire life,’ and I will never forget it.”
The intensity of the performance struck Grohl, who remarked on the sheer volume of AC/DC’s stage setup, calling it “the loudest stage I have ever stood on in my entire life.” His admiration was evident as he described AC/DC as being “the loudest band in the world.” Grohl attributed his aspirations to become a rock musician to the impact of AC/DC’s influence, recalling how he was captivated after watching their documentary, *Let There Be Rock*, in his youth.
“I didn’t know that’s how you play rock ‘n’ roll,” he said. “I thought rock ‘n’ roll was like The Beatles and KISS and things like that. I’d never seen someone so drenched in sweat that they needed an oxygen tank. I was, like, ‘That’s what I wanna be when I grow up. I wanna be that guy.’”
Despite his success and accomplishments, Grohl admitted to experiencing feelings of impostor syndrome. “I pinched myself,” he remarked, struggling to fully grasp the significance of the performance. “It’s almost like I’m watching this happen to someone else in a weird… it doesn’t feel real to me sometimes.”
Over the years, Grohl and the Foo Fighters have crossed paths with members of AC/DC, although they have not yet shared a full tour. In 2021, Grohl welcomed Brian Johnson, AC/DC’s lead vocalist, to the stage during the VAX LIVE benefit concert, which aimed to support vaccination efforts against COVID-19. This collaboration further highlights the camaraderie shared among rock legends.
The Foo Fighters remain active in the music scene, having released their latest album, *Your Favorite Toy*, in April of this year. As they continue to create music and connect with fans, Grohl’s reflections on his performance with AC/DC serve as a reminder of the power of music to evoke strong emotions and forge lasting memories.
With a career spanning decades, Grohl’s dedication to his craft and the admiration he holds for his peers shines through in his candid discussions. It is clear that performing with AC/DC was not merely a career highlight but a dream come true for the Foo Fighters’ frontman.
As Grohl continues to tour and make music, he undoubtedly carries this incredible experience with him, inspiring both himself and countless fans along the way.
