Martha Stewart has found herself at the centre of a controversy following her choice of Halloween costume, which sparked considerable backlash. The lifestyle icon attributed the mishap to a situation involving Today show host Craig Melvin during a recent appearance on the programme.

On October 30, Stewart appeared on the Today show’s Halloween special, where she demonstrated festive recipes alongside Melvin, who was dressed as rapper Snoop Dogg. During the segment, an unfortunate incident occurred when Melvin accidentally spilled chocolate ganache on Stewart, which led her to declare that her intended Halloween outfit had become “too dirty” for the occasion. In light of the time constraint—she reportedly had just ten minutes to prepare for a Halloween party—Stewart opted for an impromptu costume as a homeless person, jokingly saying, “I looked at myself. I said, ‘You really look hungry and homeless’.”

On November 1, following the airing of her Instagram post featuring the costume, critics took to social media to express their disapproval of Stewart’s choice. The now-deleted photo showed her posing in ripped jeans and featuring makeup designed to create the illusion of dirt on her face, holding a sign that read: “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” This post drew significant critique for its insensitivity towards homelessness.

In response to the backlash, Stewart issued a statement indicating her distress over the offence her costume caused. “I have spent decades teaching others how to celebrate Halloween — sharing fun, festive recipes and providing unique craft ideas,” she said. “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.”
Stewart emphasised her commitment to addressing the homelessness crisis in America, stating that she cares deeply about the issue and has engaged in charitable work to support related causes. However, she faced further criticism for the insensitivity of her costume choice and the way it trivialised a pressing social issue.
Later, the 85-year-old acknowledged that her earlier apology did not fully address the gravity of the situation, posting on Instagram, “It’s hard to admit when you’ve truly screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough.” She elaborated that her choice of costume was disrespectful, especially as many individuals are struggling economically. “Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I’m very sorry,” she added.
The controversy surrounding Stewart’s Halloween look has highlighted the ongoing challenges that come with addressing serious societal issues in a light-hearted context. Many critics argue that such portrayals can undermine the reality of homelessness rather than raise awareness.
Stewart’s reputation as a lifestyle guru has often placed her under public scrutiny, and this incident serves as a reminder of the fine line celebrities must tread when engaging with sensitive topics, even in a season typically marked by playfulness and costumes.
In the wake of this incident, it remains to be seen how Stewart will navigate the fallout and whether she will take additional steps to support the communities she is passionate about. Ultimately, it serves as a poignant reminder that intentions can sometimes clash with public perception, leaving a lasting impact on public figures.
